Abstract Reasoning Test Practice
Shapes only, most often a three by three grid with the last cell missing. Find what changes along the rows and down the columns, then complete it.
One of the logical reasoning formats, alongside inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning and diagrammatic reasoning.
Abstract Reasoning Practice Tests

Logiks Abstract
Complete the 3x3 matrix by selecting the shape that fits the pattern. Modelled on Raven-style matrices, this mirrors the abstract section of the Cubiks Logiks General test.

Adaptive Matrigma
Twelve minutes of 3x3 matrix puzzles that get harder when you are right and easier when you are wrong, with a separate sixty-second clock on every single item. Eight figures are shown and you pick the ninth from six options. Mirrors the Adaptive Matrigma, the version Assessio calls the most common.

Classic Matrigma
The older fixed form: thirty-five matrix items in one generous forty-minute sitting, where difficulty rather than the clock is what stops you. Only thirty of the thirty-five count toward your score, exactly as in the real test.

Connector Ability: Matrices
The second part of Connector Ability (Matrixen). A 3x3 grid of figures with the bottom-right cell missing, changing along the rows and down the columns at the same time. Four options, adaptive, 90 seconds an item.

Abstracte Matrix test
LTP’s own abstract reasoning test, the LTP Matrix: twenty-five 3x3 figure puzzles in twenty minutes, getting harder as you go. Eight figures are shown and you pick the ninth from eight options. You can skip an item and come back, and only correct answers count.

Master CORE (Matrices)
Master International’s screening test: 19 figure matrices from easy to hard on a 35-minute clock. Unlike most matrix tests you can skip a question and it comes back after the last one, so a hard item never has to cost you the easy ones behind it.

Alva Logic Test
Twenty 3x3 matrix tasks, each on its own two-minute clock with no overall timer. The test picks every task from how you are doing, a blank counts as wrong, and your result comes back on Alva’s own 1 to 10 scale.

Matrizen (Matrices)
A 3 x 3 grid of figures with the bottom-right cell missing: choose which of eight numbered figures completes it. Adaptive over five levels, as the Bundeswehr says its CAT is, with the eight options beside the grid as in its own Assessment Trainer.

ACER Abstract Reasoning (TAR)
Shape sequences and matrices in ACER's own three styles: next in the sequence, complete the pattern, and order the shapes and choose the middle one. Choose the Victoria Police clock (45 questions in 20 minutes) or the Fire Rescue Victoria and Queensland Police clock (30 in 35), because the same test runs at 2.6 times the pace depending on who invited you.

Clevry Abstract Reasoning (Enhanced)
Sixteen shape sequences with one or two rules each, 24 minutes on one clock. Choose the frame that comes next; there is no Skip and no Back.

Clevry Abstract Reasoning (Expert)
Sixteen shape sequences with two or three rules moving at once, and 45 minutes to find them: the most generous clock Clevry sets, because the items need it.

EPSO Abstract Reasoning
Ten series of five figures in 10 minutes: work out the rule and choose which of five options comes next. Elements move and swap cells, turn, flip between outline and solid, change shape or multiply. Generated fresh every sitting. Scored with numerical reasoning against one combined bar of 10 out of 20.

Abstract Reasoning
Spot the rule across a sequence of shape frames and choose what comes next. Mirrors the abstract items in the PI Cognitive Assessment (PICA) - the strongest single predictor of learning speed.

Revelian Abstract Reasoning Test (RART)
Revelian’s separately sold abstract paper: 32 questions in 10 minutes. Four of the six figures are alike in some way; your job is to pick the other two.

GCAT Abstract Drill
The GCAT's abstract questions on their own: 20 in 10 minutes, adaptive, six options, generated fresh every time. Rotating shapes, clock faces, shapes moving round a tile and symbol sets. A practice format, not a separate Podium test.

TestGorilla Abstract Reasoning
Fifty figure series in 10 minutes: four panels change by a rule and you pick the fifth from options A to E. Built so that almost nobody finishes, and scored as a percentile. Generated fresh every sitting.
What Abstract Reasoning Measures
Two directions at once
A matrix changes along its rows and down its columns at the same time, so the answer has to satisfy both rules. That is what makes a grid harder than a single row of frames.
Reasoning without language
With no words or numbers, the score does not depend on language or schooling. That is why matrices suit multilingual selection: EPSO sets abstract reasoning for EU careers in every official language.
Handling rising difficulty
Most abstract tests start easy and climb, either in a fixed order, as in LTP Matrix and Master CORE, or adaptively, as in Adaptive Matrigma, GITP Matrices and Alva Logic. Late items are meant to be hard.
Question Formats
Three by three matrices
Eight figures in a grid, one cell missing, and four to eight options. Cubiks Logiks Abstract, Assessio Matrigma, GITP Matrices, LTP Matrix, Master CORE, Alva Logic and the Bundeswehr Matrizen all use this style.
Figure series sold as abstract
A row of frames and the next one to find: the EPSO, Clevry and TestGorilla abstract tests and the abstract items in the PI Cognitive Assessment. The task is inductive; the vendor calls it abstract.
Odd ones out and mixed styles
Revelian RART shows six figures and asks for the two that differ. ACER TAR mixes next in the sequence, complete the pattern, and a style where you put shapes in order and choose the middle one.
Build the missing figure
AssessFirst BRAIN has you build the missing figure by stacking pieces rather than choosing from a list, and adapts its difficulty as you answer.
How to Prepare
Read rows, then columns, then diagonals
Most matrices run one rule across and another down. If neither explains the grid, check the diagonals, and whether the third cell is the first two combined or one taken from the other.
Predict before you look at the options
Name or sketch the missing figure first. Options are built to look right at a glance, and comparing them before you have a prediction pulls you toward a distractor.
Practise at your own test’s pace
Timing varies more than the items do. ACER TAR runs 45 questions in 20 minutes for Victoria Police and 30 in 35 for Fire Rescue Victoria and Queensland Police, while Classic Matrigma allows 40 minutes for 35 items.
Check whether you can skip
Master CORE and LTP Matrix let you skip an item and come back to it. Alva Logic and GITP Matrices count a blank as wrong, so on those always answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an abstract reasoning test?
A test that uses shapes and symbols with no words or numbers, asking you to find the rule across a grid or sequence and select the missing figure. Most use three by three matrices; some use figure series or odd-one-out sets instead.
What is a matrix reasoning test?
A grid of figures, normally three by three, with one cell missing. The figures change by rules running across the rows and down the columns, and you choose the figure that satisfies both. Matrigma, Logiks Abstract, LTP Matrix and Master CORE are all matrix tests.
Is non-verbal reasoning the same as abstract reasoning?
Usually, yes. Non-verbal reasoning is the wider term for any test without language, and in recruitment it nearly always means matrices or figure series. Some batteries also file spatial items under non-verbal, which is a different skill with its own page.
What score do I need on an abstract reasoning test?
There is rarely a fixed pass mark. Most results are reported as a percentile against a comparison group, so you are judged against other candidates. EPSO is an exception: abstract reasoning is scored with numerical reasoning against one combined bar of 10 out of 20.
