Spatial Reasoning Test Practice
Spatial tests ask you to move shapes in your head: turn them, flip them, fold them or fit them together, against a fast clock.
Spatial Reasoning Practice Tests

CCAT Spatial Reasoning
Rotate and flip figures mentally, identify the odd one out and complete figure series. The spatial third of the CCAT, and the item type candidates most often skip when they should be guessing.

GIA Spatial Visualisation
Each box holds two symbols. Count how many boxes hold a rotated copy rather than a mirror image, and click that number. Extra speed here buys nothing if it costs errors.

Mirror Images (Omdraaien van plaatjes)
One line figure and six turned copies of it. Exactly two of the six have also been flipped over: tick them. 30 items on a 15-minute clock. Mirrors the Spiegelbeelden subtest of the NOA MCT-M and MCT-H.

Assembling Objects (AO)
The last CAT-ASVAB subtest: 15 adaptive questions in 18 minutes. Choose which figure shows the parts put together, either by matching lettered points along a line or by fitting pieces like a puzzle. Pieces turn but never flip.

EEI Assembling Objects
Assembling Objects from MASS, the power plant maintenance battery: 20 questions in 15 minutes. Join lettered parts at the matching points, or fit unlabelled pieces together like a puzzle, and pick the one correct assembly of four.

DAA Spatial Reasoning
Two separately timed parts: join flat shapes by their labelled sides (10 in 4 minutes), then spot which turned pair of block objects keeps both marked corners (10 in 3 minutes). Mirrors the Spatial Reasoning section of the Defence Aptitude Assessment.

Components (Combineren van vormen)
A figure cut into two, three or four pieces, turned and pulled apart. Tick the two complete shapes, out of six, that those pieces make. 30 items in 9 minutes. Mirrors the Componenten subtest of the NOA capaciteitentest, and Harver’s Spatial Ability (Components).

Spatial Ability (Components)
A figure cut into pieces and pulled apart, and six whole shapes. Select the 2 shapes that match the example, as Harver’s own screen puts it. 30 items in 10 minutes, and both picks must be right. Mirrors Harver’s Spatial Ability subtest.

2D to 3D
The third TAB section, and the one candidates find hardest: match the numbered edges of a flat pattern to the lettered edges of the solid it folds into. Six drawings in 15 minutes, with no going back.

Exam 955: Spatial Relations
The second part of Exam 955: which figure the pieces make, and which block object has the top, front and right views shown. 68 questions in 40 minutes.

TestGorilla Spatial Reasoning
Turn solids made of cubes in your head, fold nets into cubes, fit flat pieces into a shape and find the next figure in a series. 12 questions in 10 minutes, four options each.

Resemble
Mentally rotate the figure by the angle shown, then rebuild it on the grid. Mirrors the Cognify Resemble spatial-reasoning game.

Spatial: Aircraft Relationships
A large aircraft, a small aircraft and sometimes an eye, shown for two seconds, with a statement such as "the small aircraft is on the left". Decide True or False from the right point of view before the picture goes.
What Spatial Reasoning Measures
Mental rotation
Holding a shape in mind and turning it to compare with another. The Thomas GIA Spatial Visualisation task and the NOA Mirror Images test both turn on telling a rotated copy from a mirror image.
Visualising assembly
Seeing how separate pieces join into a whole, or how a flat pattern folds into a solid. ASVAB and EEI Assembling Objects, the DAA Spatial Reasoning section and the TSA officer test 2D to 3D drawings all test it.
Orientation
Keeping track of left and right from a point of view other than your own. Bundeswehr Fahrtstrecken counts turns from the traveller’s view, and the FAA ATSA Aircraft Relationships section judges positions from a given viewpoint.
Question Formats
Rotation and mirror images
Decide whether two figures are the same shape turned, or a reflection. Thomas GIA asks how many pairs are rotated copies; NOA Mirror Images asks for the two flipped copies among six.
Assembling objects
Choose the figure that shows the parts put together, by matching lettered points or fitting pieces like a puzzle. CAT-ASVAB Assembling Objects sets 15 adaptive questions in 18 minutes; EEI sets 20 in 15.
Components
A figure cut into pieces and pulled apart, and a set of whole shapes to choose from. NOA Components and Harver Spatial Ability both ask for the two shapes the pieces make.
Nets, folding and views
Fold a flat pattern into a solid, or match top, front and side views to an object. USPS Exam 955 Spatial Relations, the TSA 2D to 3D section and TestGorilla Spatial Reasoning are built on it.
Routes and directions
Count the left and right turns along a route, or say where a set of directions ends on a street map. Bundeswehr Fahrtstrecken and CritiCall Map Reading use it.
How to Prepare
Track one corner, not the whole shape
Pick a distinctive feature, such as a notch or a marked corner, and follow only that through the turn. It is quicker than rotating the whole figure in your head.
Check for a flip before a turn
Rotation keeps a shape’s handedness; a mirror image reverses it. If a feature that ran clockwise now runs anticlockwise, the figure has been flipped, however it is turned.
Put yourself at the arrow
On route and map items, imagine standing at the arrow facing its direction. Left and right only make sense from the traveller’s point of view.
Accuracy before speed
Thomas says speed and accuracy are equally important on the GIA. Build accuracy at a steady pace first, then speed up, because a fast wrong answer costs more than a slow right one on most spatial tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a spatial reasoning test?
A test of how well you picture and manipulate shapes in your head: rotating them, mirroring them, folding nets into solids and fitting pieces together. It is set on its own for technical, military and aviation roles, and as one section of general ability tests such as the CCAT.
Is spatial reasoning part of logical reasoning?
It is often grouped with it, but it is a different skill. Logical tests ask you to find or apply a rule; spatial tests ask you to see what a shape looks like after it moves. Practise them separately.
Which jobs use spatial reasoning tests?
Among the tests we cover: the US armed forces through ASVAB Assembling Objects, the UK Defence Aptitude Assessment, the Bundeswehr, US Postal Service Exam 955, the TSA officer test, FAA air traffic controller screening and power plant maintenance roles through EEI.
Can you get better at spatial reasoning tests?
Scores improve with practice on the specific item type, mostly because you learn efficient strategies such as tracking one feature. Practise the exact format you will sit, because rotation, assembly and orientation items reward different strategies.
