How it works
- 1
Add the application
Pick the company from our employer directory or type any name, choose the role, and say where you are up to. It takes four short steps.
- 2
Put in the dates
The application deadline, when the online tests are due, the video interview, the assessment centre and the final interview. Add any other date under your own name for it.
- 3
Get reminded, in your calendar too
Reminder emails 3 days before each date and again the day before. Connect Google Calendar or subscribe from Apple Calendar or Outlook, and the dates appear there as well.
- 4
Follow the plan for the next stage
Each application gets a list of practice for the stage you are preparing for, spread out day by day up to the deadline. Items tick themselves off when you actually do them.
The stages it follows
Most early-career hiring runs through these stages in roughly this order. Not every employer uses every one, so you move an application straight to the stage it is at. Below each stage is what your prep plan gives you there.
- 1
Researching
Deciding where to apply and getting ready before the application goes in.
Your prep plan
Your plan looks ahead to the online tests, so you can start practising before you apply.
- 2
Applied
Application submitted. The online tests usually follow within days or weeks.
Your prep plan
Still looking ahead to the tests. Most of the useful preparation happens before the invitation lands.
- 3
Online tests
Timed aptitude tests, game-based assessments or questionnaires, sat at home.
Your prep plan
Practice tests for the assessment providers this employer is known to use, or the one your invitation names.
- 4
Video interview
Recorded answers to set questions, usually with a timer and no live interviewer.
Your prep plan
A practice video interview: questions on screen, answers recorded, feedback on each.
- 5
Assessment centre
A day of exercises such as an in-tray, a presentation, a group task and a role-play.
Your prep plan
All six exercise formats: e-tray, in-tray, written, presentation, group discussion and role-play.
- 6
Final interview
A live interview with the team or a partner, often competency or strengths based.
Your prep plan
A practice interview, plus guides to competency and strengths-based questions.
New to the process? The guide to the job application process walks through what each stage checks and how to prepare for it.

Why not just use a spreadsheet?
A spreadsheet is a perfectly good record, and if you already keep one, keep it. The difference is that a spreadsheet only knows what you type into it.
A spreadsheet is good at
- Free, and fully under your control.
- Any columns you like, sorted and filtered however you want.
- Easy to share with a careers adviser, parent or mentor.
What the tracker adds
- An email before each date, so a test window cannot close unnoticed.
- Dates that land in your calendar without being copied across.
- A plan of what to practise for the next stage, not just a record of the last one.
- Progress that updates from the practice you actually do.
If you would rather stay with a spreadsheet, our guide on how to keep track of job applications has a column layout you can copy.

Is the application tracker free?
Yes. The tracker comes with a free CogniPrep account and has no paywall: adding applications, dates, reminders and calendar sync all cost nothing. Some of the practice your plan points to, such as the full set of tests for a provider, interview practice and the full assessment centre library, needs a one-time unlock. There is no subscription.
What kinds of applications can I track?
Any. Jobs, apprenticeships, graduate schemes and graduate programs, internships and placements all work the same way. If the employer is not in our directory, type its name and the application is tracked just the same; only the employer-specific test suggestions depend on the directory.
How do the reminder emails work?
Each date gets two reminders: one 3 days before, which leaves time to fit practice in, and one the day before. If you add a date at short notice, only the second one is sent. Reminders go out during the day in the time zone of the date itself, never overnight, and they stop as soon as you close the application.
Can I see my application dates in my calendar?
Yes. Google Calendar connects directly, so changes show up quickly. Apple Calendar and Outlook subscribe to a private calendar feed with one tap, and any other calendar app can use the feed link. Deadlines appear without blocking your time; assessment centre and final interview days show as busy.
How does the plan know which tests to practise?
If the employer is in our directory and we have a sourced record of the assessment provider it uses, the plan suggests that provider’s practice tests. If your invitation names a provider, tell the tracker and it uses that instead, since the email in your inbox is a better guide to your own sitting than our record for the employer as a whole. If we have neither, the plan asks you which provider the invitation names.
How many applications can I track?
Up to 40 in progress at once, each with up to 12 dates. Applications you have closed as an offer, unsuccessful or withdrawn stay in your list as a record and do not count towards the limit.
What happens to my data?
Your applications are only visible to you. You can delete one at any time, and an application is deleted automatically two years after it was last changed.
