NOA Test Practice: the MCT-H, MCT-M and MCT-A Capaciteitentest

All eight subtests of NOA's MCT-M and MCT-H on their published clocks, the adaptive MCT-A with its one-minute questions, and the MP-B6 personality test. If your invitation or your 21+ admission letter mentions NOA, the MCT or the Algemene Capaciteitentest, you are in the right place.

Premium Tests

Components (Combineren van vormen)

A figure cut into two, three or four pieces, turned and pulled apart. Tick the two complete shapes, out of six, that those pieces make. 30 items in 9 minutes. Mirrors the Componenten subtest of the NOA capaciteitentest, and Harver’s Spatial Ability (Components).

Mirror Images (Omdraaien van plaatjes)

One line figure and six turned copies of it. Exactly two of the six have also been flipped over: tick them. 30 items on a 15-minute clock. Mirrors the Spiegelbeelden subtest of the NOA MCT-M and MCT-H.

15 minutes
Start

Word Relations (Vergelijken van woorden)

Four words: two of them mean roughly the same, or the opposite, and you are not told which. Tick the pair. 45 items in 9 minutes, twelve seconds each. Mirrors the Woordrelaties subtest of the NOA capaciteitentest.

9 minutes
Start

Arithmetic (Rekenen)

Bare sums with one value missing, whole numbers and decimals, no word problems and no calculator. 30 items in 5 minutes: ten seconds each, the fastest clock in the battery. Mirrors the Rekenvaardigheid subtest of the NOA MCT-M and MCT-H.

5 minutes
Start

Number Series (Logisch nadenken met cijfers)

Find the next number in a row built on a rule: constant steps, multipliers, alternating steps and operations, series woven together. 30 items in 15 minutes, five options each. Mirrors the Cijferreeksen subtest of the NOA capaciteitentest, and Harver’s Numerical Reasoning (Number Sequences).

15 minutes
Start

Word Analogies (Logisch nadenken met woorden)

A - B = C - ?: find the word that relates to C the way B relates to A. Everyday words, so the difficulty is in the relationship. 30 items in 9 minutes. Mirrors the Woordanalogieën subtest of the NOA capaciteitentest, and Harver’s Verbal Reasoning (Word Analogies).

9 minutes
Start

Checking (Controleren)

Two rows of digits or letters: exactly the same, or not? 100 pairs against a 4-minute clock, scored as correct minus wrong so fast guessing does not pay, and reported on speed and on errors. Mirrors the Controleren speed subtest of the NOA MCT-M and MCT-H, and Harver’s Perceptual Speed (Checking).

4 minutes

MCT-A Adaptive Capacity Test

NOA’s adaptive capaciteitentest: six parts, word relations, word analogies, arithmetic, number series, exclusion and components, with one minute on every question and the next question harder or easier depending on the last. An unanswered question brings an easier one. Ten questions a part.

Up to 60 minutes
Start

MP-B6 Personality (persoonlijkheidstest)

NOA’s Big Six personality questionnaire: 120 statements on a five-point agreement scale across six groups and eighteen scales, from calm and stable to directed at self-interest. Each end of every scale has a strength and a pitfall, and the report includes a social desirability check. No right answers, untimed.

Two things to know before you practise

Our items are in English. NOA's MCT-M and MCT-H exist in full in Dutch, English, German, French and Spanish, and the organisation that orders the test picks the language. The figure subtests need no language at all, and the formats, clocks and strategy transfer to any of them. Vocabulary does not: if your sitting is in Dutch, the word relations subtest measures Dutch vocabulary, so practise Dutch synonyms and opposites separately.

NOA advises a desktop or tablet. The NOA Talent Portal works on a phone, but NOA recommends a desktop or tablet for its capacity tests. Our games work properly at phone width for revision, but a phone result is not comparable with NOA's norms, and on the checking subtest in particular the input device changes the score.

Which NOA test have you been sent?

MCT-M: middle level

Algemene Capaciteitentest Middelbaar niveau, for VMBO and MBO level. Eight separately timed subtests, about two hours with instructions. Norms by education level, age and migration background, and an IQ estimate can be calculated for the adviser.

MCT-H: higher level

Algemene Capaciteitentest Hoger niveau, for HAVO/VWO to WO. The same eight item types at a harder level. This is the one used for hbo 21+ admission, university selection and higher-level jobs. Our difficulty curve targets this level.

MCT-A: adaptive, any level

Algemene Capaciteitentest Adaptief, in the NOA Talent Portal since April 2025. Six parts, a one-minute limit on every question, and the next question chosen from your answers. About 45 to 55 minutes.

One subtest, three names: match yours here

NOA renamed its subtests into plain Dutch in 2024, the MCT-A factsheet uses a third set of names, and every preparation site still uses the old ones. Counts and clocks are NOA's published MCT-M figures, which we use for both levels.

Lager, Midden or Hoger: how your result is reported

NOA scores each subtest as the number of items you got right, with nothing deducted for a wrong answer, and compares it with a norm group at the education level the organisation chose: people with an HBO level, for example, or MBO level 3. The adviser's report gives a stanine, a nine-point scale with a midpoint of 5, for your overall level, four factors (language, numbers, spatial and speed) and each subtest.

Your own report shows no number. Since 2024 NOA draws each result as a bar in three bands, Lager, Midden and Hoger, and says why: "Om verwarring met (school)cijfers te vermijden zijn de cijfers bij de stanines weggelaten." Measured off NOA's own report bar, Lager is the lowest three stanines (roughly the bottom quarter of the comparison group), Midden the middle three (about the middle half) and Hoger the top three. NOA does not state those cut-offs in words; the bar shows them.

A Midden is not a fail. NOA's report says a Midden result means the level is achievable for you and probably as hard or as easy for you as for the people you are compared with. There is no pass mark in the test itself: a hogeschool or an employer decides what it needs. Our feedback leads with the same band words and gives the stanine beside them, compared with CogniPrep's practice population rather than NOA's norm groups.

Two more things on the report. The MCT-M can also produce an IQ estimate, including a non-verbal IQ, for the adviser; we do not produce one. And NOA suggests a report is treated as valid for one to one and a half years.

The 21+ toets and other admissions tests

Much of NOA's testing is not hiring at all. Its heaviest documented use is education admission: the hbo 21+ route for applicants aged 21 or over without the usual entry diploma, university selection and mbo intake. NOA says the MCT-H is used widely for "HBO- en WO opleidingen, 21+ toelating, talentontwikkeling, studieadvies en loopbaanbegeleiding".

What a 21+ toets looks like. At Hogeschool Utrecht, in NOA's own 2020 account, every 21+ applicant, about 600 a year, sat six MCT-H subtests: word relations, word analogies, arithmetic, number series, exclusion and components. Other institutions may choose a different set and often add subject tests of their own, so check your invitation for the list. A 21+ applicant usually gets the result straight away.

It may be proctored at home. For admission testing NOA offers online proctoring through ProctorExam: your screen, webcam and microphone are recorded, optionally the room through a phone camera, and the recording is reviewed afterwards. It runs in Chrome only.

How to prepare. Practise the six subtests in the list above until each format is familiar, because the unusual ones (components, word relations) cost the most time on first sight, then sit them back to back to rehearse the two-hour stretch. NOA allows a pause between subtests but not during one.

Sent a Harver assessment? Five of these are its item types

Harver, the volume-hiring platform, calls its cognitive module "NOA Cognitive Ability" in its own knowledge base, and its five subtests carry NOA's subtest names in brackets: Logical Reasoning (Exclusion), Spatial Ability (Components), Numerical Reasoning (Number Sequences), Verbal Reasoning (Word Analogies) and Perceptual Speed (Checking). Practising those five here practises the item types.

Two things differ. Harver reports each subtest on its own 0 to 100% norm scale rather than as a stanine, and it does not publish its item counts or clocks, so a Harver sitting may not match NOA's published MCT-M figures.

How we built these, and what we are not certain about

MCT-H counts and clocks are not published. The only per-subtest figures NOA has published are for the MCT-M, in a 2018 paper by three NOA staff. Both levels share every item format and the same two-hour sitting, so we use the MCT-M figures for both and say so on every instruction screen. Our difficulty curve targets the MCT-H.

Three numbers are ours. The checking subtest's four-minute clock (NOA publishes none; four minutes is the shortest subtest length it mentions), arithmetic's four options (NOA's MCT-H example sheets show four, the MCT-M uses five), and ten questions per part on the MCT-A (NOA publishes neither the length nor the stop rule).

Two scoring rules are ours. NOA publishes no partial credit on the pick-two subtests, so we give none: both picks must be right. And it does not say how checking is scored, so ours is correct minus wrong, which stops fast random tapping from paying on a two-choice task.

The adaptive test is a staircase, not NOA's algorithm. The real MCT-A uses a calibrated item bank and item response theory. Ours moves up a difficulty tier after a right answer and down after a wrong one or a timeout, which reproduces what you experience rather than how NOA estimates your level.

Forward only, and no practice gate. NOA's current platform moves on as soon as you answer; whether it keeps a Back button is not documented, so ours has none. And each real subtest opens with practice items you must answer correctly before the clock starts, which we describe but do not reproduce.

What we do not simulate. The SBT, NOA's situational judgement integrity test, because practising it would amount to coaching an integrity measure; the Competentietest, because each client builds its own from 41 competencies; the Dutch language test, which is meaningless in English; and NOA's interest, values and motivation questionnaires, which are for guidance rather than selection. If your invitation names the older MPT-BS personality test, the MP-B6 game covers the same format and groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NOA test?

A Dutch cognitive capacity test from NOA, an Amsterdam test publisher that grew out of the work psychology department of the Vrije Universiteit and specialises in tests that are fair to candidates with a migration background. The MCT-M is for VMBO and MBO level, the MCT-H for HAVO/VWO to WO, and the MCT-A adapts to any level. NOA now also calls them the Algemene Capaciteitentest.

Which subtests are there?

Up to eight on the MCT-M and MCT-H: exclusion, components, mirror images, arithmetic, number series, word relations, word analogies and checking. The adaptive MCT-A has six, the same list without mirror images and checking. Organisations choose which subtests to use: Hogeschool Utrecht’s 21+ route used six.

How long does it take?

About two hours including instructions for all eight subtests of the MCT-M or MCT-H, per NOA’s factsheets; NOA’s candidate page says each test runs from 4 to 20 minutes. The MCT-A averages 45 to 55 minutes, and 95% of candidates finish within an hour and a quarter including instructions.

How is it scored, and what counts as a pass?

You are compared with people at the education level the organisation chose, on a nine-point stanine scale. Your own report shows the result as a bar labelled Lager, Midden or Hoger, with the number left off on purpose so it is not read as a school mark. NOA sets no pass mark; the school or employer decides what it needs. On the MCT-M an IQ estimate can also be calculated for the adviser.

Can I practise with NOA itself?

Yes. NOA publishes example and practice items for the MCT-M and MCT-H online, and every real subtest starts with worked examples and practice items you must answer correctly before the clock starts. Our versions skip that gate and start with the first scored item.

Can I take it on my phone?

The NOA Talent Portal works on phones, but NOA advises a desktop or tablet for the capacity test. Ours works at phone width for revision, but a phone result is not comparable with NOA’s norms, especially on the checking subtest, whose scores NOA itself notes depend on how the test is taken.

Is the NOA test available in English?

Yes. The MCT-M and MCT-H are fully available in Dutch, English, German, French and Spanish, and several subtests in seven more languages. The organisation that orders the test sets the language. Our practice items are in English.

Is Harver’s cognitive test the NOA test?

Harver’s own knowledge base calls its module "NOA Cognitive Ability", and its five subtests (Checking, Word Analogies, Components, Exclusion and Number Sequences) are NOA item types. Harver reports them on its own 0 to 100% scale rather than as stanines, so the practice here covers the items but not Harver’s scoring.

Companies That Use NOA (MCT capacity tests)

NOA’s capacity tests are used most heavily in Dutch education admissions and intake, including hbo 21+ entry tests, and in care, reintegration and employer selection, often through psychological consultancies. Every organisation below comes from NOA’s own published cases or news, and each entry says whether the use is admission, intake, development or hiring.

Hogeschool Utrecht

Higher Education

Admission, not hiring: every 21+ applicant, about 600 a year in 2020, sits six MCT-H subtests (word relations, word analogies, arithmetic, number series, exclusion and components), and the university hosts NOA’s MCT-H example sheet.

Ipse de Bruggen

Care

NOA selection assessments in recruiting and supporting its trainees, and a bespoke Talentscan for staff of its training arm, used for annual reviews and planned for hiring.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Higher Education

Admission, not hiring: a premaster assessment since 2004, an online matching questionnaire since 2014, and NOA instruments in selection for the Medicine and Criminology programmes.

mboRijnland

Vocational Education

Intake, not hiring: the NOA StartMeter for every applicant.

Gemeente Den Haag

Local Government

Intake for benefit claimants since 2016, and NOA tools at the city’s employer service point. Not the city testing its own job applicants.

DSM

Science & Materials

NOA HR instruments in career centres for existing staff: development, not selection.

Most of NOA’s published cases are not an employer testing its own applicants: they are admissions, intake for benefit claimants, or development of existing staff, and each is labelled as such. NOA also names KLM as a client without naming a test or a role, and current KLM cabin and cockpit selection is reported to run on Aon, so KLM is not listed. Confirm the current process with the organisation before preparing.

Not sure who sent your assessment? The provider identification guide matches product names to publishers, and our guide to the NOA test explains the three versions, the renamed subtests and the stanine bands. If you are wondering whether any of it can be short-circuited, we answer that at can you cheat the NOA test. Sitting a different Dutch test? See TestGroup and Ixly, which report stens rather than stanines.
