Ixly Practice Tests: Test-Toolkit, ACT and Cognitive Ability Pro

Practice the Dutch capaciteitentest you have actually been invited to. Cijferreeksen, Figurenreeksen and Verbale Analogieën at Ixly's real 45 seconds an item, the 15-minute Cognitive Ability Pro, Stroomdiagrammen, and the WPV. If your invitation says Test-Toolkit, you are in the right place.

The real test will most likely be in Dutch, and that is not your choice

Ixly administers everything through the Test-Toolkit, and the language is set by the employer or adviser when your candidate record is created, not by you when you log in. Ixly states the default is Dutch, so by the time the invitation lands the choice has been made.

Our practice content is in English, and that matters more on some papers than others. For Cijferreeksen and Figurenreeksen it barely matters, and Ixly itself lists both among the tests where language plays a smaller role. For Verbale Analogieën, Dutch vocabulary and idiom are the construct, so practise the format with us and the vocabulary separately.

If you genuinely cannot sit it in Dutch, ask the recruiter before the invitation is issued.

Which Ixly test have you been invited to?

Adaptieve Capaciteiten Test (ACT), also sold as Cognitive Ability

45 minutes on Ixly's price list. Three consecutive blocks in a fixed order: first all the Cijferreeksen, then all the Figurenreeksen, then all the Verbale Analogieën. Adaptive, 45 seconds an item, 10 to 17 items per block. You can pause only between blocks.

Cognitive Ability Pro

About 15 minutes and Ixly's current flagship, with more than 100,000 purchases. No blocks and no pauses: eleven question types interleaved in random order, so the type changes almost every item. Ixly calls the engine an AI-driven adaptive algorithm and stops the test as soon as the measurement is reliable.

A single test, or a questionnaire

Ixly also sells each reasoning test on its own at about 10 minutes, plus Stroomdiagrammen at 20. The WPV personality questionnaire is untimed and has no right answers. Where several tests are assigned, the overview screen lets you choose the order you sit them in.

What an Ixly result actually looks like, and why a 5 is not a fail

Ixly reports four numbers, not one. A stenscore from 1 to 10, a T-score around a mean of 50, a percentile, and an IQ score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Each comes with an 80% confidence interval, phrased on the report as being able to say with 80% certainty that your total score lies between two values.

A sten of 5 is an average score. It is not an onvoldoende. The scale has a mean of 5.5 and a standard deviation of 2, so 5 and 6 are the middle bands and roughly 38% of the population sits in them. Ixly's manual warns about this directly, because on a Dutch school report a 5 is a fail and candidates read it that way. It is also a sten and not a stanine: a stanine runs 1 to 9 with a mean of 5, and the two must not be conflated.

The comparison group is your education level, and it changes the answer completely. The short questionnaire before your first test collects age, gender and education level, and the last of those selects your norm group: VMBO, MBO, HBO or WO. The manual's own worked example takes one raw score and reports it as sten 8.3 and the 92nd percentile against the VMBO group, and sten 4.2 and the 25th percentile against the WO group. That is why a percentile with no named norm group means very little on this provider, and why our practice percentile is a ranking against people who practise here rather than a prediction of your Ixly sten.

There can be a real pass mark. Ixly's Sogeti case describes calibrated cut-off scores built for two role categories, engineering and consultancy, tuned over a year to balance rejecting unsuitable candidates against rejecting good ones. So depending on the employer, an Ixly result may be a hard cut rather than a ranking.

Ixly advises employers to decide on the overall g-score. Published reliabilities are .81 for Cijferreeksen, .77 for Figurenreeksen, .86 for Verbale Analogieën and .92 for the overall score, and Ixly notes that Figurenreeksen alone falls short of the usual .80 threshold. So one weak block matters less than a weak total.

How an Ixly test behaves, and what we could not confirm

An unanswered item is scored as wrong. Not skipped, not neutral: wrong. That single rule inverts the advice you may have learned on a negatively marked test like Aon's or the Thomas GIA. Here there is no such thing as a blank, so a guess can never cost you anything a timeout would not cost you anyway. At 45 seconds an item, the habit to build is committing your best answer at around 35 seconds and moving on.

You cannot go back. The manual states that an answer is saved to the database as soon as it is given and cannot be changed, and that the browser Back button has no effect. Leaving the test does not buy you thinking time either: the item's clock keeps running while you are away, and you resume at the next item rather than the one you left.

Every test is preceded by a worked example and three untimed practice items. The practice items tell you whether you were right and leave the message on screen as long as you want. Use them properly: they are the only untimed part of the sitting, and Ixly deliberately explains the adaptivity in plain language beforehand because its own research found that doing so improves the experience.

Figurenreeksen contains two different item shapes, and sources disagree about which. Ixly's Abstract Reasoning product page describes progressive series where you choose the right successor. The ACT manual's own worked example for the same bank is a 3x3 grid with eight cells filled, the bottom right empty and four options labelled A to D. A Dutch preparation vendor lists both Figuurreeksen and Matrixen. We build both, and you should expect either.

Verbale Analogieën asks for two answers, not one. Two words are shown in a square, and you choose from six words exactly the two that form the same relation. One mark for the pair. There are fifteen possible pairs among six options, so guessing here is worth far less than on an ordinary multiple choice, which makes working the relation out first the only viable approach.

Three numbers in our simulation are ours, not Ixly's. Ixly publishes no item count for Cognitive Ability Pro and no per-item time, so our 20 items at 40 seconds is inferred from the 15 minute duration. It publishes nothing at all about Stroomdiagrammen's internals, so our 14 items at 75 seconds is inferred from the 20 minute duration. And it names none of Cognitive Ability Pro's eleven question types: four are named by a Dutch preparation vendor, and those four are the ones we mix. We do not claim to know the other seven.

Our adaptation is a staircase, not Ixly's algorithm. The real ACT selects items by Maximum Expected Information, estimates ability by EAP, and stops when the standard error of measurement falls below 0.39. That needs a bank calibrated on real response data. Ours tracks your level up and down and stops when the estimate settles, which reproduces what you experience, the difficulty chasing you and the test ending at a different length for different people, without pretending to be the same engine.

What the countdown looks like on the real test is unknown. No source shows it. We show a visible clock, because practice that hides the clock teaches nothing about pacing, but the presentation is our design decision rather than a reproduction.

Ixly is not the TMA method, and the difference matters

The TMA method, Talenten Motivatie Analyse, is a separate instrument published by a separate company, EhrmVision. Ixly's own product catalogue contains no TMA product, its about page never mentions TMA or EhrmVision and lists only university research collaborations, and its implementation partners page names no partners at all.

The confusion is understandable rather than careless. Both are Dutch publishers with a Utrecht address; several Ixly products use the word Talent in their names, which reads similarly to Talenten Motivatie Analyse; and Dutch practice-test aggregators list Ixly and TMA side by side as interchangeable assessment bureaus you might be sent to.

We assert no relationship in either direction because no source supports one: no partnership, no licence, no acquisition. What we can say is that they are different instruments, and that if you have been told you are sitting a TMA, practising Ixly's tests is not what you need.

What Ixly sells that we deliberately do not simulate

Ixly splits its own catalogue into Selectie, Ontwikkeling, Leiderschap and Retentie, and we build from the first column only. Our product is preparation for a test you are about to sit as part of an application. Practising an instrument nobody is screened on would be selling you the wrong thing. So the Talent Development Profile, 360 Feedback, the Learning Agility Profile, Thinking Styles, Team Role, the Career Profile, Carrièrewaarden, the study and career interest questionnaires, the Employability Scan and every leadership instrument are all out, because Ixly lists them under development, leadership or career rather than under selection.

Four more are real selection tests that we cannot yet build faithfully. Integriteit Besluitvorming is explicitly used in selection and reports on four scales, but Ixly publishes nothing about its item format, response mechanics or clock. Ixly's four games, Rally, Connect, Blocks and Barista, come with a construct and a duration and nothing else. Talent Select Profiel and Competentie Select Profiel are composite report bundles assembled from underlying tests rather than single instruments. And Begrijpend Lezen reports CEFR language levels rather than a percentile or a sten, which is a fifth reporting model again. If you have been invited to one of these, the stage is real and we do not simulate it.

Carrièrewaarden is the closest call and is out for now. Ixly places Career Drives under retention while noting it supports selection, development and retention; a secondary source says the normative version is for advisory use while the ipsative version can be used for selection. Given that conflict we have left it out rather than describe it either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ixly and what is the Test-Toolkit?

Ixly B.V. is a Dutch test publisher based in Utrecht, founded in 2005 and known as ORGA-toolkit until 2009. Candidates rarely see the name Ixly. What they see is the Test-Toolkit, the online portal the tests run in: an adviser creates your candidate record, assigns the tests, and you get an invitation email with a unique link. If your invitation says Test-Toolkit, you are sitting an Ixly test.

Will the Ixly test be in Dutch?

Most likely yes, and it is not your choice. In the Test-Toolkit the employer or adviser sets your language when creating your candidate record, and Ixly states the default is Dutch. Many tests are also available in English, and some in German and French, but the language is fixed when the record is created. If you genuinely cannot sit it in Dutch, ask the recruiter before the invitation is issued rather than after.

Is Ixly the same as the TMA method?

No. They are separate instruments from separate publishers. The TMA method (Talenten Motivatie Analyse) is published by EhrmVision, and Ixly’s own product catalogue contains no TMA product, its about page never mentions TMA or EhrmVision, and its partners page names no partners at all. Both companies are Dutch and both are based in Utrecht, and Dutch practice-test aggregators list them side by side, which is where the confusion comes from. If you have been told you are sitting "a TMA", you are not sitting an Ixly test.

How long do I get per question on an Ixly test?

Forty-five seconds, on every item, with no overall clock for you to manage. Ixly’s own instruction screen says so: "Voor elke vraag heeft u 45 seconden de tijd." Cognitive Ability Pro also uses a fixed time per item, but Ixly does not publish what it is.

What happens if I do not answer an Ixly question in time?

It is marked wrong. Ixly’s instruction screen states it directly: "Vul een antwoord in voordat de tijd verstreken is. Doet u dit niet, dan wordt de vraag fout gerekend." There is no such thing as a blank on this test, so a guess is never worse than silence. That is the opposite of the correct strategy on a negatively marked test, and it is the single most useful thing to know before you sit one.

Can I go back to a previous question on an Ixly test?

No. The ACT manual is explicit that an answer is written to the database the moment you give it and cannot be changed, and that pressing Back in your browser has no effect. Leaving the test does not help either: the item’s clock keeps running while you are away, and when you return you are on the next item rather than the one you left.

What is a sten score and is a 5 a fail?

A sten is a ten-point scale with a mean of 5.5 and a standard deviation of 2, and it is the headline number on an Ixly report. A 5 is an average result, not a fail. Ixly’s manual says so in as many words, precisely because a 5 is a fail on a Dutch school report and candidates read it that way: "Een stenscore van bijvoorbeeld 5 is niet een onvoldoende, maar betekent een ‘gemiddelde’ score." Note it is a sten and not a stanine, which is a nine-point scale with a different mean.

Who am I compared against on an Ixly test?

People at your own education level: VMBO, MBO, HBO or WO. That is what the short questionnaire before the first test is for. It matters far more than most candidates realise. The manual’s own worked example takes a single raw score and reports it as sten 8.3 and the 92nd percentile against the VMBO group, and sten 4.2 and the 25th percentile against the WO group. The same performance, described two completely different ways.

Does an Ixly report include an IQ score?

Yes, on the default report. Ixly returns four measures: a sten, a T-score, a percentile and an IQ score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, computed against the Dutch working population. An alternative report omits the IQ and compares only against education-level norm groups. Each score is shown with an 80% confidence interval, because a single sitting measures you to within a range rather than to a point.

Is the ACT the same as Cognitive Ability Pro?

No, they are two products and Ixly sells both. The Adaptieve Capaciteiten Test, also marketed as Cognitive Ability, is the older one: 45 minutes on Ixly’s price list, run as three consecutive blocks of Cijferreeksen, Figurenreeksen and Verbale Analogieën. Cognitive Ability Pro is the newer flagship: about 15 minutes, no blocks at all, and eleven question types interleaved in random order. You may be invited to either.

How many questions is the ACT?

It varies, by design. The ACT is a genuine computerised adaptive test: it starts just below average difficulty, adapts to your answers and stops once it has measured you reliably, which after recalibration takes between 10 and 17 items per subtest. So roughly 30 to 51 items in total, and a shorter run is not a worse one. Ixly’s own material gives three different total durations, between 40 and 45 minutes maximum, with most candidates finishing in 20 to 40.

Has Ixly been reviewed by COTAN?

Yes, and the result is more mixed than most sites report. Ixly published the ACT’s own COTAN outcome: theoretical foundations good, test material good, manual good, reliability sufficient, construct validity sufficient, but NORMS insufficient and CRITERION VALIDITY insufficient, with Ixly noting both needed further research. Submitted February 2017, result May 2018. Third-party preparation sites describe Ixly’s tests as simply "positively reviewed by COTAN", which is not what that table says.

Am I allowed a calculator?

Scratch paper yes, calculator almost certainly not. Ixly’s manual explicitly permits a kladblok and never mentions a calculator; Dutch preparation vendors state calculators are not allowed on Ixly capacity tests. Treat it as scratch paper only. The number-series construct does not need a calculator anyway.

What is the WPV, and is it the same as the WPS or WPI?

All three are the same questionnaire. Dutch materials call it the Werkgerelateerde Persoonlijkheidsvragenlijst (WPV); English materials call it the Work-related Personality Survey (WPS) and sometimes the Work-related Personality Inventory (WPI). It has 276 items in its full form, reports 25 scales in five factors, and comes in adaptive, normative, ipsative and compact variants. It is untimed and has no right answers.

Which employers use Ixly?

Ixly publishes customer cases, and the ones that are genuinely SELECTION are Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen (about 4,000 assessment trajectories a year since 2018), Nederlandse Spoorwegen for external traineeship applicants, Sogeti for testers, cyber security staff and developers, and Sectorinstituut Transport en Logistiek for truck drivers. Ixly’s largest deployment by volume, UWV WERKbedrijf, is career guidance for jobseekers rather than screening for a job, so it is not on that list.

Companies That Use Ixly (Test-Toolkit)

Every organisation below appears in a case study published by Ixly itself, and each one is listed here for a use that is genuinely SELECTION. Ixly has larger deployments than several of these, but its biggest by volume, UWV WERKbedrijf, is career guidance for jobseekers rather than screening for a job, so it is deliberately absent.

Ixly is a Dutch publisher and its tests are administered through the Test-Toolkit, so an invitation may name the platform rather than the company. Employers change vendors between hiring rounds, so confirm the current process with your recruiter. Ixly is not the TMA method: that is a separate instrument from a separate publisher.
