TMA Test Practice: the Talentenanalyse and the Capaciteitenanalyse

The TMA test is two things. The Talentenanalyse has no right answers and 312 statements; the Capaciteitenanalyse is up to five short, fast, separately scored subtests where pace is everything. Practise all six here, with TMA's own item counts, the published clocks and the 1 to 9 score explained.

A TMA invitation is two different tests

The Talentenanalyse: no right answers

A 312-statement questionnaire where you keep choosing the statement that fits you best. It places you on 22 drives, each with a named talent at both ends, such as Orde & structuur running from Creatief to Accuraat. It is untimed, takes about an hour, and ends in a feedback conversation. Almost every TMA process includes it, and the reports built from it, a drives report, a competency match, a candidate report, are all the same sitting.

The Capaciteitenanalyse: short and fast

Also called the CAPA. Up to five cognitive subtests, each with its own clock and its own score from 1 to 9, and no total. An employer can send one subtest or several, and TMA says they are always used alongside a Talentenanalyse. PRiMAN, a TMA company, calls them very suitable as a pre-selection criterion, so they can come early in a process.

The five capacity subtests, and why pace is the whole game

Item counts are TMA's own. The clocks come from PRiMAN, a TMA company since May 2026, because tma.nl publishes none. The spread in seconds per item is the most useful thing to know: a candidate who carries one pace into the next subtest loses either way.

Logisch Cijfermatig Inzicht (number series)

26 items in 20 minutes, about 46 seconds each: the next number in a series built from the four operations.

Logisch Taal Inzicht (word analogies)

20 items in 7 minutes, about 21 seconds each: A is to B as C is to what, with deliberately simple words.

Rekenvaardigheid (arithmetic)

39 items in 8 minutes, about 12 seconds each: bare sums with five answers each, easy to hard.

Logisch Figuurlijk Inzicht (figure reasoning)

15 items in 10 minutes, about 40 seconds each: figure series and grids, and which figure does not belong.

Technisch Inzicht (technical insight)

15 items in 5 minutes, about 20 seconds each: technical and physics problems, mainly for technical roles.

What a TMA result looks like, and why a 5 is not a fail

Every capacity subtest gets its own number from 1 to 9. A TMA-generated report shows one bar per subtest with a Dutch label beside it, a paragraph on each, and no overall score. A partner who runs the test puts it plainly: you get no IQ. So a weak subtest is visible to the employer rather than averaged away, and a strong one cannot carry a weak one.

A 5 is "gemiddeld", average. On a Dutch school report a 5 is an onvoldoende. On a TMA report it is the middle of the scale. TMA defines its Talentenanalyse scale as a stanine, mean 5 and standard deviation 2, and the capacity scale reads the same way, although the capacity report itself does not name it.

You are compared with people at your education level. TMA norms the capacity subtests at middle and higher level, MBO and HBO/WO, so the same answers score higher against the MBO group than against the HBO/WO one. The level of the role usually decides which.

There is no published pass mark. Each employer decides how much weight to give the results, and PRiMAN says employers increasingly weight them heavily in selection.

The real test is in Dutch, on a computer

TMA's platform requires a Windows or Mac computer and a screen of at least 1024 by 768, and no source mentions phones or tablets. Treat the real test as desktop or laptop only. A result on a phone here is not comparable to TMA's norms, especially on Rekenvaardigheid, where a small screen costs time you do not have.

Our practice items are in English with TMA's Dutch subtest names. Number series, arithmetic and the figure subtest barely depend on language, so practice transfers well. Word analogies are where it transfers least: practise the format here and Dutch word relations separately. On the arithmetic subtest, remember that Dutch writes decimals with a comma.

What TMA does not publish, and what we chose

The real screens are not public. TMA publishes no screenshot or candidate manual for the capacity subtests. We do not know whether you can go back, whether the clock is shown or whether there is a practice item. Our versions move forward only with a Skip button, show the clock, and have no practice round.

Option counts are ours except on arithmetic. TMA gives five options per sum on Rekenvaardigheid. For the others we follow the only samples that show a count: four for number series and word analogies, five for figures, three for technical insight.

No source mentions negative marking, and TMA's own report text reads a low score as lower capacity or carelessness, not as a guessing penalty. We score number right, so a blank is never better than a guess.

The Talentenanalyse block size is our reading. TMA says you choose the statement that fits you best from statements of equal social desirability, but not how many you see at once. We show pairs. Our version is also shortened, to 96 choices, and its results describe how your choices leaned rather than a stanine against TMA's Dutch norm group.

Technisch Inzicht items are drawings on the real test. Ours describe each mechanism in words. The reasoning is the same; add some diagram-based practice before the day.

Controleren is not built. A sixth subtest, checking 100 pairs of letter and number strings in 4 minutes, appears on TMA's 2021 pages and older reports but has gone from its current product pages, so we have not built it. If your invitation names it, that stage is real and we do not simulate it.

TMA is not Ixly

Both are Dutch publishers based in Utrecht, and Dutch practice-test sites list them side by side, but they are different companies with different instruments. The TMA Method is published by TMA B.V., the name on its handbook and on the COTAN register entry for the Talentenanalyse. If your invitation says Test-Toolkit, you are sitting an Ixly test instead.

TMA has also grown by acquisition, so the name on your invitation may be a TMA company rather than TMA itself: PRiMAN in the Netherlands, TMA Performance (formerly DecisionWise) in the United States, TMA France, and BrainsFirst.

BrainsFirst and the NeurOlympics, which we do not simulate

BrainsFirst, "a TMA business" since March 2026, sells a game-based cognitive assessment called the NeurOlympics: four games, Collect, Activate, Connect and Synchronise, about 45 minutes in all, started from a link in an email. Each game has a practice round and stops when it has enough data rather than on a clock. BrainsFirst recommends a laptop or desktop, accepts a tablet and says a phone screen is too small.

The output is a brain profile matched against a target profile for the role, using norm groups by age and gender. Gemeente Rotterdam and TOPdesk are named on BrainsFirst's own site as recruitment users, and TMA Performance sells it for pre-employment screening in the United States.

Why we do not build it: BrainsFirst publishes one sentence per game about what it measures, and nothing about the screens, the rules or the scoring. Four games built from four sentences would be invented, not simulated. BrainsFirst offers a free demo on its own site, and that is the practice worth doing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TMA test?

Two instruments from TMA B.V. in Utrecht, under the TMA Method (Talenten Motivatie Analyse). The Talentenanalyse is a drives questionnaire with no right answers; the Capaciteitenanalyse is a set of short cognitive subtests. TMA says capacity tests are always used together with a Talentenanalyse and a feedback conversation, so if you have been sent a capacity test, expect the questionnaire too.

How long is the Talentenanalyse, and can I fail it?

It has 312 statements, takes about an hour according to TMA's handbook, and is untimed. There are no right answers and no pass mark: the employer compares your profile with the role. The report also prints a consistency score out of 10, which shows whether your answers agreed with themselves, and TMA partners treat anything below 6 as unreliable.

What is in the Capaciteitenanalyse?

Up to five subtests, each separately timed and scored: number series (26 items, about 20 minutes), word analogies (20, about 7), arithmetic (39, about 8), figure series and matrices (15, about 10) and technical insight (15, about 5). The item counts are TMA's; the times come from PRiMAN, a TMA company. Your employer may send only some of them.

How is the Capaciteitenanalyse scored, and is a 5 a fail?

Each subtest gets a number from 1 to 9 against people at your education level, MBO or HBO/WO, with a Dutch label from "zeer laag" to "zeer hoog". A 5 is "gemiddeld", average, not a fail. There is no IQ and no total score, so a weak subtest shows on its own rather than being averaged away. TMA publishes no pass mark; each employer sets its own.

Can I use a calculator on the TMA?

No source mentions one, and TMA partners say pen and paper are allowed. Plan on scrap paper and mental arithmetic, especially for Rekenvaardigheid, where you have about 12 seconds a sum.

Is TMA the same as Ixly?

No. They are different publishers with different instruments, and both happen to be based in Utrecht. The TMA Method is published by TMA B.V., which is also the name on the COTAN register entry for the Talentenanalyse. If your invitation says Test-Toolkit, you are sitting an Ixly test instead.

What is BrainsFirst or the NeurOlympics?

A four-game cognitive assessment from BrainsFirst, which TMA bought in March 2026. It takes about 45 minutes, has a practice round before each game and is meant for a laptop or tablet rather than a phone. We explain it on this page but do not simulate it, because BrainsFirst publishes only a one-line description of each game.

Can I take the TMA in English?

The Talentenanalyse is available in several languages including English, and the employer sets it up; TMA’s handbook describes a candidate sitting it in English with the report downloaded in Dutch or French. English versions of the capacity subtests are not confirmed by any source, so expect them in Dutch.

Companies That Use TMA

TMA is used across Dutch government, healthcare, education and business, most often as the Talentenanalyse drives questionnaire in the middle of a selection process, followed by a conversation about the report. Some organisations add one or more Capaciteitenanalyse subtests, which TMA says are always used alongside a Talentenanalyse.

Monuta

Funeral Services & Insurance

The Talentenanalyse tests every hire against three core competencies, and TMA’s handbook describes it as a standard part of the application process from the invitation to a second interview.

Gemeente Groningen (Werk & Participatie)

Local Government

The Werk & Participatie directorate holds its own TMA licence and uses the instruments from recruitment and selection onwards. The case covers that one directorate, not the whole municipality.

Administratief Centrum UvA and HvA

Higher Education

The shared administration centre of the University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences makes TMA part of its recruitment process, especially when hiring managers.

St. Antonius Ziekenhuis

Healthcare

Used the Talentenanalyse mainly in its application procedure at first; a nurse in the case sat it when applying in 2012. The same case says use has since shifted towards development.

These are TMA’s own case studies. They describe the Talentenanalyse at the hiring stage and none of them says which capacity subtests, if any, the organisation adds, so confirm with the recruiter which parts of the TMA you will sit.

About CogniPrep TMA Practice

CogniPrep provides independent simulations of the TMA selection instruments. TMA B.V. is a Utrecht test and talent-management publisher founded around 1999, in partnership with Main Capital Partners since December 2024, which has since acquired DecisionWise (now TMA Performance) in the United States, HMG in France, STYR, BrainsFirst and PRiMAN. The TMA Talentenanalyse is a 312-statement ipsative questionnaire, registered with COTAN as TMA Talentenanalyse 312, reporting 22 drives in six clusters as stanines against a Dutch norm group, with a consistency score out of 10. The TMA Capaciteitenanalyse comprises Logisch Cijfermatig Inzicht (26 number series), Logisch Taal Inzicht (20 word analogies), Rekenvaardigheid (39 sums with five options), Logisch Figuurlijk Inzicht (15 figure items) and Technisch Inzicht (15 technical items), each separately timed and scored 1 to 9 against MBO or HBO/WO norms, with no IQ and no total.

  • 6 TMA practice games: five capacity subtests and the Talentenanalyse
  • Every subtest on its own clock; about 12 to 46 seconds an item depending on the subtest
  • Number right scoring; no source mentions negative marking
  • Scored 1 to 9 per subtest; a 5 is average, not a fail
  • No IQ and no total score
  • Pen and paper allowed; no calculator mentioned in any source
  • Real test on a computer, in Dutch
  • Hiring evidence from TMA's own cases: Monuta, Gemeente Groningen (Werk & Participatie) and the UvA and HvA administration centre
