LTP Practice: the G-test, the Matrix and LTP’s Other Capacity Tests
LTP is a Dutch assessment bureau that publishes its own tests. An LTP invitation usually means an online scan in LTP’s portal: one or more of five capacity tests and a questionnaire, often followed by a day with an LTP psychologist. Practise each test at LTP’s own length and clock, and match the Dutch name on your invitation to the right one below.
The real capacity tests cannot be sat on a phone
LTP does not allow capacity tests on a phone or tablet: you need a computer or laptop with a mouse or touchpad. Practise here on a phone if that is what you have, but a phone score is not comparable to LTP’s. Questionnaire-only scans may be done on a tablet.
Judged against the job’s level
Only correct answers count. Your number correct is compared with people tested at the level the role needs, mbo, hbo or wo, not with your own diploma, and against a score the employer sets. LTP’s reports use stanines and the words ondergemiddeld, gemiddeld and bovengemiddeld.
A psychologist reads it with you
In a full LTP assessment the psychologist discusses your online results and places them in context, and some tests are taken again under supervision. A score you could not reproduce in the room is the one thing that setup is built to notice.

LTP’s own abstract reasoning test, the LTP Matrix: twenty-five 3x3 figure puzzles in twenty minutes, getting harder as you go. Eight figures are shown and you pick the ninth from eight options. You can skip an item and come back, and only correct answers count.
Big Five persoonlijkheidsvragenlijst
LTP’s standard personality questionnaire: 99 statements on a seven-point scale from Helemaal mee oneens to Helemaal mee eens, reported on the five Big Five factors. There are no right answers, and on a real LTP sitting a psychologist reads the profile with you.
Premium Tests
G-test
LTP’s general ability test: fifty non-verbal items with matrices, number series, number analogies, figure analogies, figure series and pattern folding mixed through one paper. LTP does not publish the time limit; this uses the twenty minutes preparation sites report, and nobody is expected to finish.
Verbale Relaties test
LTP’s verbal reasoning test, the TVRA: forty double analogies in twenty-six minutes. Each reads "... relates to X as Y relates to ...", and you choose one word from each of two columns of five. Both words must be right for the item to count.
Numerieke Vaardigheden test (NIT)
LTP’s numerical test, also called the Numerieke Inzichttest: eight tables and graphs with five questions on each, forty questions in twenty-five minutes. A calculator is allowed, and some questions cannot be answered from the data at all.
Cijferreeksen test
LTP’s number series test: twenty-eight series in fifteen minutes, about thirty-two seconds each, choosing the next number from five with no calculator. It is also the number series part of the G-test and the retest LTP uses for numerical ability.
WPQ Werkstijlen
LTP’s Work Personality Questionnaire, reported as Werkstijlen: 34 statements about how you like to work, placed on eight scales such as Bedachtzaam to Actiegericht and Zelfstartend to Werkt graag met druk. Neither end of a scale is the better one.
Which LTP test have you been invited to?
"G-test"
LTP’s general ability test. 50 items with six non-verbal types mixed together: matrices, number series, number analogies, figure analogies, figure series and pattern folding. LTP publishes the item count but not the clock; preparation sites say 20 minutes.
"Abstracte Matrix test"
25 matrix puzzles in 20 minutes, choosing the ninth figure from eight. Also the retest LTP uses for abstract ability.
"Verbale Relaties test"
Double word analogies: pick one word from each of two columns. In Dutch on a Dutch programme, which makes it the one LTP test where language matters.
"Numerieke Vaardigheden test" or NIT
Tables and graphs with five questions each: 40 in 25 minutes (a WO form is 25 in 15). A calculator is allowed, and some questions cannot be answered from the data.
"Cijferreeksen test"
28 number series in 15 minutes, no calculator. Also part of the G-test and LTP’s retest for numerical ability.
"Persoonlijkheidsvragenlijst" or "Werkstijlen"
LTP’s Big Five questionnaire (99 statements) and its WPQ, reported as Werkstijlen (34 statements). No right answers, a seven-point scale and no clock.
How LTP reports your result
Only correct answers count. LTP tells candidates the number of errors is not taken into account: it is the number correct that is compared with the norm. So a blank and a wrong answer cost the same, and every LTP capacity test should end with an answer on every item.
The norm is the job’s level, not your diploma. LTP’s reports compare your score with a relevant norm group, "het getoetste niveau", the level of thinking the role requires, and say plainly that it need not match your education. The employer sets the score it wants, and the report says whether you met it: "Je hebt de norm gehaald". The overall intellectual ability score is not an average of the individual tests.
Stanines and three bands. LTP’s reports tabulate raw scores beside stanines, a nine-point scale with 5 in the middle, and describe results as ondergemiddeld, gemiddeld or bovengemiddeld. Our feedback translates your practice result into the same vocabulary, against our practice population rather than an LTP norm group, which we do not have and do not fake.
A psychologist, a retest, an advice. In a full assessment the psychologist discusses your online results with you and writes a selection advice (Positief, Negatief or "Geschikt, onder voorwaarden"). LTP’s portal also carries a retest route per domain: abstract by the Matrix, numerical by Cijferreeksen, verbal by a syllogisms test.
What LTP runs that we do not simulate
Watson Glaser. LTP administers Pearson’s Watson Glaser critical thinking test for some clients, and its "Kritisch redeneren" add-on is very likely that test. We already simulate it: see our Watson Glaser practice.
Games and AI. Frenzy Fest (about 60 minutes, a festival run under time pressure), Building Docks (an integrity game), Everest and AIQ, and LTP ChatLab, a conversation with an AI avatar that an LTP psychologist then discusses with you. LTP publishes no mechanics or scoring for any of them and says Frenzy Fest needs no preparation, so we describe them rather than imitate them.
Other questionnaires and the rest of the day. LTP’s portal also carries a VPI, a HEXACO inventory, drivers, values, influencing styles and team roles questionnaires, and derailer, integrity and safe-working add-ons; the syllogisms test is used only as a verbal retest. The interview and role plays are assessed by people. None of these has a published format we could build to faithfully.
Packages. LTP sells packages rather than single tests: Pre Fit (a quick screen of verbal, numerical and abstract ability and personality), Talent Scan (35 minutes, for mbo roles), Talent Fit (for hbo and wo roles) and psychologist-led assessments. The name on your invitation tells you the package; the portal lists the tests inside it.

How we built these, and what we are not certain about
Where the figures come from. The item counts and clocks for the Matrix (25 in 20 minutes), the NIT (40 in 25 minutes) and Cijferreeksen (28 in 15 minutes), and the G-test’s 50 items and six types, come from LTP’s own portal. Three things do not: the G-test’s 20 minutes is a preparation-site figure; the formats of its figure analogies, figure series and pattern folding are our reading, since LTP does not publish them; and the Verbale Relaties clock of 26 minutes for 40 items is derived from the pace of LTP’s own practice version.
English items, Dutch names. LTP runs its tests in the language the client sets, usually Dutch. Our items are in English, because a reasoning item is only as good as its wording, and the formats, clocks, navigation and strategy are what practice improves. On the Verbale Relaties test in particular, practice in English does not close a second-language gap.
Fresh papers every time. LTP runs several parallel forms of each test at each level. Our matrix, series, analogy and pattern folding items are generated for every sitting with the answer computed from the rule, and the verbal and numerical tests draw a fresh set from larger banks.
No practice phase. The real tests open with worked examples and a few practice items. Ours go straight to the first scored item and describe the real practice phase in the instructions instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the LTP G-test?
LTP’s general ability test: 50 non-verbal items, abstract, numerical and spatial, mixing matrices, number series, number analogies, figure analogies, figure series and pattern folding through one paper. LTP does not publish its time limit; preparation sites report 20 minutes, which is what our version uses.
Can I take LTP’s tests on my phone?
Not the capacity tests. LTP says "Capaciteitentests kunnen niet op een tablet of een mobiele telefoon gemaakt worden": you need a computer or laptop with a mouse or touchpad and a keyboard. A scan that is only questionnaires may be done on a tablet. You can practise here on a phone, but a phone score is not comparable to LTP’s.
Is there negative marking on LTP tests?
No. LTP counts correct answers only: "Het aantal fouten wordt niet meegenomen in de beoordeling". Its instructions tell you to answer every question even when you are unsure, because a blank and a wrong answer score the same.
Will I finish the test?
Probably not, and that is intended. LTP says its tests are designed so that few people answer every question in the time. Not finishing is normal; leaving reached items blank is the avoidable mistake.
How is my LTP score judged?
Against a norm group at the level the role requires, mbo, hbo or wo, which LTP says need not match your own education, and against a score the employer sets; the report shows whether you met it. In a full assessment an LTP psychologist discusses your online results with you and writes a selection advice.
Can I practise with LTP itself?
Yes. LTP runs a free practice site with short versions of the Matrix, Verbale Relaties, Numerieke Vaardigheden and Cijferreeksen tests at mbo, hbo and wo level, at ltponline.com/portal/practice. It does not include a G-test practice run, and LTP says outside practice sites use its name without its involvement.
What language will my LTP test be in?
LTP’s portal runs in Dutch, English, German and French, and the client sets your preferred language. Ask the recruiter before you start if you need English. Our practice items are in English with LTP’s Dutch names for each test.
What is Frenzy Fest?
A 60-minute LTP assessment game in which you run a festival under time pressure, with tasks arriving at once. LTP says specific preparation "is niet nodig en ook niet wenselijk", and it publishes no mechanics or scoring, so we do not simulate it.
I have dyslexia. Can I get extra time?
Tell the employer before you start and provide a dyslexia statement. The employer can ask LTP for an adapted programme.
