Clevry, Criterion or Psycruit? The same tests

Verified September 2026

Clevry is Criterion Partnership. The Brighton company was renamed Clevry UK Ltd in April 2021, according to Companies House. Prep sites still sell its tests under the old names Utopia, B2C and CWS, which are the Expert, Enhanced and Essential levels below.

Your portal may say Psycruit. That is Clevry's candidate platform, and employers often have their own branded version of it: Royal Mail's is the "Royal Mail Group Assessment Portal". If the link in your invitation ends in psycruit.com or clevry.com, this is the right page.

Clevry is not Criteria. Criteria Corp, maker of the CCAT, is a different company. If your invitation mentions the CCAT or Criteria, go to our Criteria practice tests instead.

The word in brackets is the level, and each level is a different test

Clevry sells its verbal and numerical tests at three levels, and each has its own clock and its own comparison group. The report prints the level in the test's name, "Verbal Reasoning Test (Enhanced)", and so does your invitation. We build every level separately, because practising the 9-minute Enhanced verbal test for an 11-minute Expert sitting practises the wrong clock and the wrong material.

Essential

Formerly Criterion Workforce Series (CWS)

Operatives, apprentices, team leaders and first-line supervisors in production, manufacturing and engineering.

  • Verbal Reasoning: 16 questions, 10 minutes
  • Numerical Reasoning: 16 questions, 15 minutes
  • Mechanical Reasoning: 20 questions, 12 minutes

Enhanced

Formerly B2C

Customer service, call centre, sales and administrative staff, and junior managers.

  • Verbal Reasoning: 16 questions, 9 minutes
  • Numerical Reasoning: 16 questions, 18 minutes
  • Abstract Reasoning: 16 questions, 24 minutes
  • Checking: 16 questions, 10 minutes

Expert

Formerly Utopia

Graduates, managers, professionals and specialists: Clevry’s "high level critical reasoning tests".

  • Verbal Reasoning: 16 questions, 11 minutes
  • Numerical Reasoning: 16 questions, 20 minutes
  • Abstract Reasoning: 16 questions, 45 minutes

Answer every question on the page, because you cannot come back

A Clevry test is a set of pages, not a stream of questions. Clevry's own practice pages put one passage or table on the left and a group of four questions on the right. Its candidate FAQ spells out the rule: you can change your answers while you are on a page, "but once you proceed you will be unable to go back to any previous pages", and "the system requires that you complete all of the questions on the page before moving on."

That rules out the two habits most practice sites teach: skipping a hard question to come back later, and a final review. The habit that works is checking all four answers against the passage before you press Next, because Next is final. Our verbal, numerical and checking games are built as pages of four with exactly this rule, and the mechanical test as pages of one.

The four-per-page figure is read from Clevry's practice pages rather than published as a number. The rule itself is Clevry's.

How Clevry scores you, and why your time is on the report

A sten from 1 to 10, in five bands

Every result is a sten against a comparison group for your exact test and level, drawn as ten dots under five labels: low overall performance, below average, average, above average and outstanding performance. A 5 or 6 is the average band, where most people land, and is not a fail. The employer adds a red, amber or green flag at thresholds they choose, and no pass mark is published.

Your time is printed, not scored

Clevry scores correct answers only. But each result on the employer's report states the time limit, your time and the average, for example "The time limit for this test is 9 minutes and Olivia took 3 minutes 39 seconds. The average completion time for this test is 7 minutes", followed by the note that completion time "is not an indication of ability". Our scoring ignores time too, and our feedback shows where yours sat.

Strong results can be verified

The online tests are unsupervised, so Clevry's report tells employers the result "can be verified online using the Clevry ability verification facility": a shorter version of the same test with different questions, often at a later stage. The score worth having is one you can repeat.

Personality, situational judgement and Message Me

The Clevry Personality Questionnaire (CPQ)

Statements rated on a five-point agreement scale, built from Clevry’s library of scales, six statements to a scale. Core measures 20 traits plus a Social Desirability scale in about 20 minutes, and is what we simulate at its full 126 statements; Enhanced measures 30 in about 30 minutes. In 2026 Clevry launched CPQ Nova, a redeveloped library of 48 scales, but has not yet published the scale list of any off-the-shelf Nova questionnaire. The format is the same five-point scale either way. Clevry says there are no rights or wrongs; employers compare your profile with one written for the role.

The Graduate/Managerial SJT

Fifteen scenarios drawn from a bank of 28, in 30 minutes. For each you choose the most effective and the least effective response, and Clevry reports a sten for each of five competencies: Thinking, Achieving, Influencing, Collaboration and Teamwork, and Commercial Awareness. Clevry also sells Leadership, Contact Centre and Warehouse Operatives SJTs and builds bespoke ones, such as Travelodge’s. We simulate the graduate test; the answering method is the same across all of them.

Message Me

A chat-style situational judgement test: a conversation laid out like a messaging app, where you reply by choosing one of several messages. It is untimed and comes in Sales, Recruiter and Retail versions. Clevry has not published how many replies each turn offers, whether the conversation branches, or how replies are keyed, so we do not simulate it rather than guess. If you meet it, treat each reply as an SJT answer: what would actually work with this person.

What else Clevry runs

Recorded video interviews, virtual assessment centres, development centres and 360 feedback. None is a scored candidate test we can simulate honestly. Shorter verification re-tests of the ability tests exist and use different questions. Some prep sites also list older paper-only Criterion tests, such as fault detection and proof reading, that are no longer in Clevry’s catalogue.

Where our version is a reconstruction

  • The Checking Test's questions. Clevry publishes the task (find errors between two pieces of reference material) and the format (five options) but no question. Ours compare an Original stock list with a Copy and ask how many lines are wrong, which line is wrong, or which field was copied wrongly. The wording is ours.
  • Options on abstract and mechanical items. Clevry does not publish them. We use five on abstract items, matching the numerical and checking tests, and four on mechanical items.
  • The practice round. The real tests open with a few practice questions before the clock starts. Ours go straight to the scored questions, as every game on CogniPrep does, and say so in the instructions.
  • The sten in our feedback. We work it out from where you placed against other CogniPrep candidates on the same game, not against Clevry's own comparison group, and we say so on every result.

Phone or laptop?

Clevry's answer: most of its assessments can be completed on a phone, but timed tests "are better suited to larger screen devices", because a test with reference material is hard to do when you cannot see the material and the questions together. Its personality questionnaire is optimised for phones.

Every test here works properly on a phone, with buttons to jump between the passage and the questions. But sit the real ability tests on a laptop, with your calculator beside you for the numerical one, and treat a phone result here as practice rather than a comparison with Clevry's norms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Clevry the same as Criterion Partnership?

Yes. Criterion Partnership Limited was renamed Clevry UK Ltd on 9 April 2021 (Companies House, company 03443538), and its tests carry on under the Clevry name. The candidate platform is still called Psycruit, and many employers have their own branded portal on it, so the page you land on may carry your employer’s name rather than Clevry’s.

Which Clevry test will I sit?

Your invitation names the test and a level in brackets, such as "Verbal Reasoning Test (Enhanced)". Essential is for production, manufacturing and apprentice roles, Enhanced for customer service, sales and administration, and Expert for graduates, managers and professionals. Abstract reasoning exists only at Enhanced and Expert, checking only at Enhanced and mechanical reasoning only at Essential.

How many questions are there, and how long do I get?

Sixteen questions on every Clevry ability test except mechanical, which has 20. Verbal takes 10, 9 or 11 minutes at Essential, Enhanced and Expert; numerical 15, 18 or 20; abstract 24 at Enhanced and 45 at Expert; checking 10; mechanical 12. The instruction page states the limit and the number of questions before the clock starts.

Can I go back or skip a question on a Clevry test?

No. Clevry’s candidate FAQ says you can change your answers while you are on a page, but you must answer every question on it before moving on, and once you proceed you cannot return to earlier pages. There is no Skip and no review screen.

Can I use a calculator on the Clevry numerical test?

Yes, unless your instructions say otherwise. It is your own calculator: Clevry does not build one into the test. Have it ready before you start, and practise with the same one.

Is there a pass mark for Clevry tests?

Clevry does not publish one, and its candidate FAQ tells candidates it cannot give information about how assessments are scored. Employers see a sten from 1 to 10 against a comparison group for your exact test and level, with a red, amber or green flag at thresholds they set for the role.

Does finishing quickly help on a Clevry test?

No. Clevry says its tests are "measures of power, rather than speed", and reports that 98% of candidates attempt every question in time. Your completion time does appear on the employer’s report beside the average, with the note that it "is not an indication of ability", so the useful aim is accuracy.

Can I take Clevry tests on my phone?

Yes, but Clevry recommends a laptop, desktop or tablet for timed tests, because it is hard to see the reference material and the questions together on a small screen. The personality questionnaire is designed for phones.

Companies That Use Clevry (formerly Criterion Partnership)

Clevry runs its tests on the Psycruit platform, and many employers have their own branded portal there, so the page you land on often carries the employer’s name rather than Clevry’s. Its customers cluster in UK retail, hospitality, logistics, utilities and graduate schemes, usually at the first sift straight after an application.

Clevry UK Ltd, of Brighton, was Criterion Partnership Limited until April 2021. The group parent is the Finnish company Clevry International Oy, and Clevry runs norm groups for Finland, Sweden and Norway as well as the UK, so candidates in the Nordics meet these tests too. Candidates sit them on the Psycruit platform, often on a portal branded with the employer, usually at the first sift straight after an application. Verified September 2026.
