What the evidence shows

Royal Mail's online assessments are delivered through a portal titled "Royal Mail" on Clevry's candidate platform, Psycruit. Its FAQ opens: "Welcome to the Royal Mail Group Assessment Portal." Clevry, which was called Criterion Partnership until 2021, also shows the Royal Mail logo on its ability test product page. That is first-party evidence that Royal Mail uses Clevry's platform.

What it does not tell you is which tests a given role sets. Prep sites describe a situational judgement test combined with ability tests such as numerical, verbal and error checking, and an untimed personality questionnaire. That is plausible, because those are the tests Clevry sells, but it is not something Royal Mail or Clevry publishes, so wait for your invitation and read the test names on it. Clevry names each ability test with its level in brackets, such as "Numerical Reasoning Test (Enhanced)".

What the portal tells candidates

  • You cannot go back. "Once you proceed you will be unable to go back to any previous pages within the assessment." Every question on a page must be answered before moving on.
  • Use a larger screen. The portal suggests a laptop, desktop or tablet, because ability tests with reference material are better suited to a bigger screen.
  • There is no published pass mark. "Unfortunately we can't give information about the way we score assessments."
  • Feedback is available on request. The portal says so, which is less common than it should be.
  • Deadlines are firm. Your deadline is in the email from Royal Mail Group, and tests not completed by it cannot be progressed.

Royal Mail Roles With This Process

Operational

  • Postal and delivery roles
  • Mail centre and processing roles
  • Drivers

Management and Graduate

  • Operational management
  • Graduate and early-careers schemes

Royal Mail does not publish which roles use which tests, so treat this list as the kinds of role the portal serves rather than a promise about yours.

Top Tips

Match the level in brackets

Clevry sells each ability test at up to three levels with different clocks. The word in brackets on your invitation tells you which; practise that one on our Clevry practice tests.

Finish each page properly before pressing Next

With no way back, a quick check of every answer on the page is worth more than finishing early. Clevry does not score speed, and almost everyone finishes in time.

For checking tests, compare field by field

If your invitation includes a checking or error-checking test, compare the two sources one field at a time, in the same order on every line. Look-alike characters such as O and 0 are where errors hide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Royal Mail use Clevry?

Royal Mail's online assessments run on a Royal Mail-branded portal on Clevry's Psycruit platform, and Clevry shows the Royal Mail logo on its own site. Which specific tests a role sets is not published.

Is there a pass mark for the Royal Mail assessment?

Not one that is published. The portal says it cannot give information about how assessments are scored. Clevry reports results to employers as a sten from 1 to 10.

Can I do the Royal Mail tests on my phone?

You may be able to, but the portal recommends a laptop, desktop or tablet for ability tests, because they involve reference material you need to see alongside the questions.
