British Gas Assessment and Online Test Guide
Which online tests British Gas uses for customer service, engineering apprenticeships and Centrica graduate schemes, and how to prepare for each
Customer service and call centre roles
Clevry, a UK assessment company, publishes a case study on British Gas, which it says recruits around 1,500 people a year. Before Clevry’s work, only 25% of candidates reaching British Gas’s assessment centres were making the grade. The fix was a values-based online stage:
- A problem-solving challenge:"a customer-focused online problem-solving challenge that communicates the British Gas values and assesses reasoning and decision making, using bespoke content based on real job demands".
- Personality questionnaires: measuring how well your values and motivations fit British Gas’s culture. The results feed the second round directly, as interview questions tailored to you.
Clevry reports that attrition in call centre roles fell from 43% to 9%. The case study is undated and the content was written for British Gas, so practise the kind of reasoning it describes rather than expecting familiar questions.
Engineering apprenticeships
Centrica’s apprenticeships page sets a goal of 3,500 apprentices by 2030 and features smart metering and customer service apprenticeships. For the engineering routes, a 2025 British Gas advert covering Gas Service and Repair, Heating Installation and Smart Metering was explicit: applying registered your interest rather than applying for a job, and as part of the process you had to complete an online mechanical reasoning test. Only candidates who passed went forward, and British Gas then got in touch if there were opportunities in their area.
The adverts ask for four GCSEs at grade C or 4 and above, ideally including Maths and English, a full UK driving licence with no more than six points, and availability for training at British Gas’s academies around the UK, with accommodation and travel provided. The Level 3 Gas Service and Repair advert offered £19,307 to start, rising to £47,303 plus bonus once the programme and aftercare support are complete, and a London weighting of £4,160 to £6,240, and warned that staggered recruitment through 2026 could mean a late reply. The apprenticeships page also carries an Assessment Centre Prep video, worth watching once you pass the test.
Trainee engineers
Not every route is an apprenticeship. A Trainee Kitchen Appliance Engineer advert, listed on 29 October 2026, offers a seven-week training programme mostly in Wakefield within your first four months, £28,090 to start and £40,133 once the programme is complete. It asks for a full UK driving licence with no more than six points and names no online test.
Centrica graduate schemes
Centrica’s graduate page lists nine schemes: Business Management, Centrica Energy, Commercial Analyst, DTS Software Engineering, Engineering, Finance, Marketing, People and Procurement. Adverts for the 2027 intake offered £32,000, asked for at least a 2:1 (or a 2:2 with a Master’s), and described a two-year programme of three rotational placements starting in September 2027. Those adverts had closed by 5 November 2026.
Centrica does not publish its graduate selection stages, and we found no source naming the graduate tests. Clevry has published an undated case study on scoring technology it built for assessors at Centrica’s graduate assessment centres, which tells you an assessment centre has been part of the process, but nothing about the online tests.
Practise
These are Clevry’s standard tests, not British Gas’s bespoke content, which is not published. The mechanical test is here because engineering applicants need mechanical reasoning practice, not because British Gas uses Clevry for engineers; nothing says it does.
- Clevry Graduate/Managerial SJT (30 minutes) - Scenario judgement in Clevry’s format, for the decision-making half of the challenge. Pitched at graduates, so a step up.
- Clevry Personality Questionnaire (Core) (20 minutes) - A standard Clevry personality questionnaire; British Gas’s feeds the questions you are asked at interview.
- Clevry Mechanical Reasoning (Essential) (12 minutes) - Gears, pulleys, levers and forces at pace. Generic mechanical practice: British Gas has not said whose test it uses.
Our guide to mechanical reasoning tests covers the principles engineering tests draw on, and our personality questionnaire guide explains how values-fit questionnaires are read.
Common questions
Does British Gas use Clevry?
For customer service and call centre hiring, Clevry’s own case study says so. Nothing we found links Clevry to the engineering apprenticeship test or the graduate tests, so do not assume those are Clevry’s.
What is on the British Gas mechanical reasoning test?
British Gas has not published it. Mechanical reasoning tests typically show drawings of gears, pulleys, levers and other mechanisms and ask how they behave, so practise reading those quickly and accurately.
Is British Gas the same as Centrica?
British Gas is part of Centrica, and both recruit through the Life at Centrica careers site, so a British Gas role and a Centrica graduate scheme start in the same place.
