Home Depot Assessment Test: What to Expect

Hourly applicants to The Home Depot's stores and supply chain take an online assessment, and The Home Depot explains it in more detail than almost any other US retailer. Here is what its own page says, what the questions look like, and how to approach them.

What the Home Depot Assessment Is

The Home Depot’s careers site has a page devoted to its online assessment, updated in October 2026. You do not need to be in a store to take it. You have 96 hours to finish it, it should take about 20 minutes, and you can stop and restart as many times as you need within the 96 hours.

It has two parts, and the length depends on the kind of role you applied for:

  • Store and merchandising roles: 11 video-based scenarios and 16 multiple-choice questions.
  • Supply chain roles: 8 video-based scenarios and 10 multiple-choice questions.
This is The Home Depot's own assessment
The Home Depot does not name a test vendor, and its sample screens carry no vendor branding. We do not simulate this assessment, and we are not going to sell you a practice test that claims to be it. What we can do is explain the format, which is a common one.

The Two Question Types

Part 1: video scenarios

You watch a short video of a situation in a store or warehouse, with audio and captions, then mark one response as the one you would be most likely to do and one as the one you would be least likelyto do. In The Home Depot’s own sample screen, the four options all concern a difficult problem at work:

  • Ask coworkers for advice on how they solve complex problems at work.
  • Take a break from the issue and try again on your next shift.
  • Keep following the steps from training, knowing a difficult problem can take time to diagnose properly.
  • Let your supervisor know you are working on a solution.

Every option sounds reasonable. That is the point of the format: it tests judgment, not whether you can spot an obviously wrong answer. Our situational judgment test guide explains how these are usually built.

Part 2: questions about you

Text only, with no sound or video. Each question asks how you approach something, and you pick the answer that best reflects your experiences and preferences. The sample asks how you make sure you are careful when completing tasks at work or school, with five answers ranging from double-checking every detail to not worrying too much as long as the job gets done safely. If you have little work history, The Home Depot says you can answer from school or volunteering.

What It Measures

The Home Depot lists six areas:

  • Customer service and sales: how you approach sales and customer situations. Store and merchandising roles only.
  • Adaptability and learning orientation: learning new things in a changing environment.
  • Responsibility and dependability: completing tasks reliably and on time.
  • Teamwork: how you work with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Safety and thoroughness: how careful you are when completing tasks.
  • Initiative: how you respond to important or urgent tasks and problems.

Is There an Answer Key?

No, and The Home Depot’s own sample shows why. In the careful-work question, the answers are not right and wrong; they are different working styles, from very cautious to fairly relaxed. Which one fits a given role best is something only the scoring knows, so answering as yourself is the most reliable approach.

What does help:

  • Use the six areas as your guide. They tell you what The Home Depot cares about. When a scenario touches one of them, ask yourself which response shows it best.
  • Choose your least likely as carefully as your most likely. You are asked for both.
  • Answer the questions about you honestly. Our guide to work-style questionnaires explains why consistency matters more than trying to guess the ideal profile.
  • Use the 96 hours. Pick a time when you are free of distractions, as The Home Depot recommends, and if something interrupts you, stop and come back.

Accessibility and Accommodations

The assessment works on phones and with screen readers. The Home Depot names JAWS and NVDA as the ones it tests with most, and the platform has several contrast options. Video scenarios have captions. You may have a job coach, vocational rehabilitation coach or support person such as a parent help you with the application and assessment.

If a disability could affect your performance, The Home Depot says you can ask for help or for an alternative to the assessment by emailing myTHDHR@homedepot.com. It also says accommodation requests are not part of the selection decision and are not shared with hiring managers unless otherwise apparent.

What Happens Next

  1. Apply online for an hourly store or distribution center role.
  2. Take the online assessment within 96 hours.
  3. Interview. If your application is selected, The Home Depot may contact you by email or phone to arrange one. Our STAR method guide helps with the “tell me about a time” questions retail interviews often use.

Where The Home Depot Hires

The assessment page covers store and merchandising roles and supply chain roles. The Home Depot’s careers site splits hiring into two groups:

  • Hourly store and distribution center roles, such as cashier, customer service and sales associate, support associate, freight associate and general warehouse associate.
  • Salaried, corporate and support roles, such as asset protection, assistant store manager, customer service representative, delivery driver, outside sales, and store support center roles in operations, marketing and technology. These use a separate Workday application, and the assessment page does not say they take the same assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Home Depot assessment?

About 20 minutes, according to The Home Depot, with 96 hours to complete it. Store and merchandising roles have more questions than supply chain roles.

Can I take it on my phone?

Yes. The Home Depot says the assessment platform is mobile-enabled.

Do I need sound?

The first part has video with audio, but captions are available. The second part is text only.

Do you have a practice test for it?

Not a replica. The Home Depot builds its own assessment and we do not copy it. Our situational judgment guide explains the most and least likely format, and our overview of pre-employment tests explains how assessments like this fit into hiring.
