What the Partnership uses, and how we know

John Lewis Partnership recruitment runs on Sova Assessment. Sova publishes a customer story about it, “Selecting the Right Partners”, including a named quote from a John Lewis Partner and Talent Assessment Manager. That is first-party evidence from the vendor rather than an inference from what similar retailers do.

Sova does not publish which sections the Partnership has switched on, and this is a vendor whose content is configured per employer and per role, so treat the section list below as the menu rather than as your exact paper. What is consistent everywhere is the format: one continuous sitting rather than separate stages, delivered from sovaonline.com and branded as John Lewis rather than as Sova.

The clock you will not see

Sova's ability tests carry no countdown by default. Nothing on screen tells you to hurry. What Sova's own practitioner report tells the employer is that “although the tests are not time-limited, the time taken to make a response is recorded and taken into account in the score”.

The practical rule that follows: work at a steady pace, commit to an answer rather than going round in circles on one question, and do not treat the missing timer as permission to deliberate indefinitely. Only the time on your correct answers feeds the score, so rushing into a wrong answer gains you nothing either.

What a Partnership sitting can contain

  • Situational judgement. Realistic scenarios where you choose the best and the worst response. Worth practising specifically: this is not the rate-every-option format used by SHL and Cubiks.
  • A personality questionnaire. A five-column forced ranking grid over 18 work traits, with no score and no pass mark, and a separate measure of how positively you presented yourself.
  • Reasoning sections. Numerical against tables and charts, verbal as True, False or Cannot Say, logical over shape sequences. All adapt as you answer.
  • A video interview, in many Sova pipelines, on the same platform. Sova states that time is not recorded on video sections.

Preparing for a values-led employer without gaming it

The Partnership is employee-owned and hires against its own idea of what a Partner is, which makes the situational judgement and personality sections the ones people are most tempted to second-guess. Two things are worth knowing before you try.

First, the situational judgement key is built from an employer's competency framework, so the same answer can score differently at two companies. Guessing at what a retailer wants to hear is less reliable than judging which response actually resolves the situation in front of you.

Second, the personality questionnaire measures and reports how positively you presented yourself. Rank the most employable-sounding statement highest in every block and the report tells the Partnership your preferences “may be less accentuated than the results suggest”, which discounts the whole profile. Trying to look ideal is the only way to fail that section.

Practical preparation

Sit it in one go

Sova tells candidates to “complete all tasks in one sitting, if possible”. You can resume from the invitation link if a connection drops, but plan for an uninterrupted block.

Use the free practice questions

Every section of the real assessment opens with at least one unscored practice question, and the candidate hub has practice tasks before you start. Nothing there counts towards your score.

Pen, paper, calculator

Sova's guidance names all three for the ability questions. Have them out before you open the link, because the sitting is continuous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the John Lewis online assessment timed?

There is usually no countdown on screen, and Sova records the time taken on every response and scores it on the ability sections. A countdown is a feature an employer can switch on, so some deployments show one.

How long does it take?

Neither the Partnership nor Sova publishes a length, and it depends on the sections configured for your role. Sova's published Early Careers bundle runs 15 to 30 minutes; a sitting with a video stage takes longer. Allow an uninterrupted hour.

Does Waitrose use the same assessment?

Waitrose is part of the John Lewis Partnership, but Sova's customer story is about the Partnership's recruitment rather than about a specific brand or role, and no source we found breaks it down further. Confirm with your recruiter.

Will I know it is a Sova assessment?

Probably not from the branding: Sova is white labelled, so it arrives in the Partnership's colours. The test player is hosted at sovaonline.com and support links point at sovaassessment.zendesk.com, which are the two reliable tells.
