What Nationwide uses, and how we know

Nationwide Building Society's recruitment runs on Sova Assessment, and Sova's own customer story for Nationwide is unusually specific about which parts. It names a blended online assessment covering personality, situational judgement and learnability, one-way video interviews with personalised content featuring Nationwide employees, and virtual assessment centres run on Sova's Digital Assessment Centre with Microsoft Teams.

That is the most section-level detail any Sova employer publishes, which makes Nationwide one of the few processes you can prepare for precisely rather than generically. The story also reports 89% accuracy at identifying exceptional performers, 97% of candidates finding the assessment engaging, and a 90% reduction in manual administration. Those are marketing figures; the section list is the useful part.

The learnability test, which almost nobody prepares for

Learnability is the section that catches people out, because most candidates have never met one. Sova describes it as measuring “how quickly a candidate can learn and apply new patterns and problem-solving rules”. It is not a knowledge test and it is not really an accuracy test: what is scored is the rate at which you pick a rule up, which means starting badly and improving fast beats being flat and moderate.

The practical advice follows from that. Do not treat an early wrong answer as a failure; treat it as information. When a run of correct answers suddenly breaks, assume the rule has changed rather than that you have made a careless mistake, and start testing a new idea rather than guessing harder.

There is no clock, and the test is still timed

Sova's ability tests show no countdown by default. Sova's own practitioner report says that “although the tests are not time-limited, the time taken to make a response is recorded and taken into account in the score”. So the absence of a timer is the absence of a warning, not the absence of measurement.

On the personality questionnaire and situational judgement sections there is no equivalent published timing rule, so take those at a considered pace. On anything that looks like a reasoning question, keep moving.

What each section asks of you

Personality questionnaire

A forced ranking grid. Five statements, five columns from “Least like me” to “Most like me”, one statement per column and no ties. It reports 18 work traits in three groups, built on the HEXACO model, and it has no score and no pass mark. It does separately report how positively you presented yourself: rank the flawless-sounding statements highest every time and the report tells Nationwide your preferences “may be less accentuated than the results suggest”.

Situational judgement

Pick the most effective and the least effective response to each scenario. You do not rank the others. Most people find the worst response easier to spot than the best, and because Sova scores the two picks separately, that is worth marks on its own.

Video interview

One-way, with Nationwide employees appearing in the question content. Sova states that “time is not recorded on the video recording sections, so this will not affect your results”, which means the preparation time before each answer is genuinely free.

Practical preparation

Sit it in one block

Sova tells candidates to “complete all tasks in one sitting, if possible”. A dropped connection is recoverable from the invitation link, but a blended sitting is long and your accuracy in the last third is measurable.

Use the practice questions

Each section opens with an unscored practice question, and the candidate hub has practice tasks before you begin. Nothing there counts, so it is the one place to be slow.

Answer the personality section as you are

Nationwide is hiring for fit against its own framework, and a profile assembled to look ideal reads as a raised desirability flag on top of a flat profile. That is a worse outcome than any honest answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Nationwide use a numerical or verbal reasoning test?

Sova's Nationwide story names personality, situational judgement and learnability, and does not mention reasoning tests. Sova content is configured per role, so a different Nationwide role may well include them. Prepare for the three named sections first and treat the reasoning tests as likely rather than certain.

Is the Nationwide online assessment timed?

There is usually no countdown on screen. Sova records the time taken on every response and scores the time on each correct answer on its ability tests.

Can I do the Nationwide assessment on my phone?

Sova says its assessments are compatible on a mobile, tablet or laptop, and recommends Chrome. The exception it names is the virtual assessment centre, which it does not recommend on a phone because the screen may be too small.

Will I get feedback?

That is Nationwide's choice. Sova generates candidate reports automatically and says that if the employer chooses, you will receive feedback on the behaviours you demonstrated. The candidate version of a Sova report contains no number, only a band, what it means for work, and a development suggestion.
