HEMA Sollicitatie and Assessio Assessment

HEMA’s own recruitment privacy statement explains more about its hiring than its careers pages do: who meets a chatbot, who sits an assessment with Assessio, and which checks follow

Store jobs

Your age, availability and preferred location
Higher roles
An assessment through Assessio
Assessment covers
Your capacities and your personality

Where this comes from

HEMA’s careers pages say little about selection beyond “start direct je sollicitatie”. Its recruitment privacy statement, last updated in March 2026, is far more specific, because it has to say what happens to your data at each step. Everything below comes from that document unless stated otherwise.

Applying for a store job: Tom

For a job in a HEMA store you can apply through Tom, short for Tom Pouce, HEMA’s “virtuele recruitment assistent”, which runs on WhatsApp and is supplied by Scotty AI.

  • Tom asks a few questions about your age, your availability and where you want to work, so it can decide whether a vacancy fits you.
  • If you are too young to work, Tom rejects the application automatically. That is the only decision it takes alone, and HEMA asks your consent for it first.
  • “Tom maakt verder geen beoordeling over je geschiktheid en motivatie.” That judgement is made by HEMA’s recruitment team.
  • Using Tom is voluntary. You can apply on the recruitment website instead, or by talking to the filiaalmanager of the store you want to work in. If you disagree with Tom’s outcome, you have the right to a human review via recruitment@hema.nl.

No test is mentioned for store jobs. HEMA runs both its own stores and stores owned by independent franchise partners, and its careers pages note that franchise stores can set their own terms.

The Assessio assessment for higher roles

HEMA states it plainly: “Voor bepaalde gevoelige functies moet je een assessment doorlopen als onderdeel van de sollicitatieprocedure. Je persoonsgegevens worden gedeeld met ons assessmentbureau, Assessio.” The results it processes include “kenmerken over je capaciteiten en van je persoonlijkheid”, so expect an ability test and a personality questionnaire. It also limits the scope: “Assessments worden alleen ingezet bij sollicitaties voor hogere functies.” If you are hired, HEMA keeps the results for longer.

HEMA does not say which Assessio tests
Assessio sells several. In the Netherlands its arm is Assessio Bloom, formerly eelloo, whose recruitment tests are the Q1000 Capaciteiten battery and the Q1000 Persoonlijkheid questionnaire. Assessio’s Nordic range includes the Matrigma reasoning test and the MAP personality questionnaire. HEMA has not said which it uses, so check your invitation.

If the invitation is for Q1000 Capaciteiten, know its defining rule before you start: every question has its own clock. Prep sources add that answers are final once you move on and a blank counts as wrong, so always answer. The battery mixes verbal reasoning, number series and figure series. For the personality part, our personality test guide covers the format.

The checks that follow

  • References. Depending on the role, HEMA may contact referees, with their consent.
  • The FAD register. HEMA belongs to the FAD, the retail sector’s fraud warning register, and checks whether applicants appear in it. If you were dismissed from a previous retail job for fraud, that employer may have registered you.
  • VOG. HEMA may ask for a Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag for leadership roles in its stores and for certain roles in its (e)DC distribution centres.

How to prepare

For a store job

Have your availability exact before you open the chat: days, hours and from when. Tom only checks age, availability and location; your suitability and motivation are judged by HEMA’s recruitment team, not the bot.

For a filiaalmanager or office role

Ask the recruiter which Assessio tests you will sit and whether at home or on site, then practise that format on a clock. Prepare the interviews with examples of leading a team and handling a sensitive situation, using the STAR method, since “gevoelige functies” is the phrase HEMA uses for who is assessed.

Practise Assessio’s tests

These cover the main Assessio formats. HEMA has not said which of them it uses.

Our Assessio practice hub explains each test and the difference between the Dutch and Nordic ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does HEMA use Harver?

It did: Harver published a case study on HEMA’s store hiring in 2019. HEMA’s March 2026 privacy statement lists its recruitment processors as Jobylon, Tom (Scotty AI) and Microsoft 365, with no Harver, so we do not treat Harver as current.

Is there an assessment for a HEMA bijbaan?

No. HEMA says assessments are only used for higher roles. A store application goes through Tom, the website or the filiaalmanager.

Which roles count as “hogere functies”?

HEMA does not list them. Its statement refers to “bepaalde gevoelige functies”, and the recruiter will tell you if yours is one.

CogniPrep is an independent practice platform. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to HEMA, Assessio or Scotty AI. Our tests are independent simulations, not the real assessments. This page draws on HEMA’s recruitment privacy statement (March 2026) and its careers site as read on 5 November 2026; confirm the details with HEMA’s recruitment team.
