Wonderlic Practice Tests

Practice all 3 components of Wonderlic Select: the 50-question cognitive test in 12 minutes, plus the personality and motivation inventories. Wonderlic does not score the cognitive test by counting your correct answers — it weights every question by difficulty, and the questions get harder as you go.

The One Thing That Makes the Wonderlic Different

Your score is not a count of correct answers. Each question is weighted by how hard it is — and the hard ones come last.

Wonderlic weights every question by its difficulty and by the impact of guessing, and says plainly why: a weighted result is more precise than a raw total. Set that beside the other published fact about the paper — the questions get progressively harder — and the consequence is unavoidable. The marks are back-loaded. Two candidates who answer the same number of questions correctly do not necessarily get the same score, because which ones they got right is part of the calculation.

That is why pace matters more here than on any other test on this site. Twelve minutes across 50 questions is 14.4 seconds each, the tightest budget we cover anywhere. Every extra second you spend proving an early, lightly weighted item is a second taken from the later, heavier ones you may never see. Getting stuck at question 12 is not a small loss of a small number of marks; it is spending your budget in the cheap part of the shop.

One honest limit on this. Wonderlic publishes that the weighting exists and what it is for, but not the weights themselves, and it does not publish how the impact of guessing is handled. So we will not tell you what a blind guess is worth, and you should distrust any prep resource that puts a number on it. What the published facts do support is simple: the scarce resource is time, and the way to convert time into score is to keep moving so that more of the back half of the paper is in reach.

If you have prepared for a CCAT, unlearn “every question is worth the same”

The Criteria CCAT is the closest test to the Wonderlic in shape: 50 questions, one short clock, mixed item types. It is not the closest in scoring. Criteria scores a raw count of correct answers with no penalty for a wrong one, which makes every item worth exactly one mark and makes a blind guess strictly better than a blank. Wonderlic weights items instead, so items are not interchangeable and the arithmetic that makes CCAT guessing obviously correct simply does not apply.

The Wonderlic is also faster: the same 50 questions in 12 minutes rather than 15, which is 14.4seconds an item against 18. If you are preparing for both, keep the difference in mind where it bites — on the CCAT the goal is to bank the cheapest marks anywhere in the paper, on the Wonderlic it is to still be moving when the expensive ones arrive.

Wonderlic Select: Three Components, Weighted by Job

Wonderlic Select, formerly sold as WonScore, bundles three separate instruments. An employer may send you all three or only one, and how heavily each counts is not fixed: the weighting varies by job profile, and Wonderlic builds those profiles using O*NET occupational data. So the same three components can be combined differently for a warehouse role and for a sales role at the same company.

Cognitive ability

50 questions in 12 minutes, mixing simple math, basic logic, language comprehension, spatial reasoning and pattern identification. Progressively harder, and weighted by difficulty. This is the only component with a score you can raise.

Personality

A Five Factor questionnaire reported on 5scales under Wonderlic’s own labels. Wonderlic states that Dependability and Stress Tolerance are the most predictive of performance across nearly all roles.

Motivation

A RIASEC interest inventory: 58 forced-choice questions in about 20 minutes, three work tasks per question, pick the one you would most prefer. No least-preferred pick, so every answer is a positive choice.

Who is Wonderlic?

Short-form testing since 1937

Wonderlic has been publishing short cognitive tests since 1937, which makes it one of the oldest names in the field and the most widely recognised assessment brand in the United States. The 12-minute format is not a modern shortcut; it is the original product.

A bundle, not a single test

Wonderlic Select, formerly WonScore, combines cognitive ability, personality and motivation. If an invitation names Wonderlic without saying more, you do not yet know how many of the three you will be asked to complete.

Weighted per job, using O*NET

Wonderlic builds job profiles from O*NET occupational data and uses them to decide how much each component counts. That is why there is no single Wonderlic pass mark to chase: the target moves with the role.

The 5 Personality Scales

The personality component is built on the Five Factor Model, but Wonderlic renames the scales, and the renamed versions are what appears in a report. Both names are below so you can recognise yours either way. There is nothing to revise here: the profile is useful to an employer only if it is what you actually think.

Cooperation

Agreeableness

Working with others without friction — being tolerant, considerate and willing to accommodate.

Dependability

Conscientiousnessmost predictive

Following through, being organised and doing what you said you would do without supervision.

Stress Tolerance

Emotional Stabilitymost predictive

Staying composed under pressure, deadlines and criticism rather than becoming reactive.

Sociability

Extraversion

Drawing energy from people, speaking up in groups and initiating contact readily.

Open-mindedness

Openness to Experience

Being curious, receptive to new methods and comfortable changing your approach.

The two scales flagged above are flagged because Wonderlic says so: it states that Dependability and Stress Tolerance are the most predictive of performance across nearly all roles. That is worth knowing for interpretation rather than for tactics. Answering as though you were the most dependable and unflappable person alive is exactly the behaviour that produces an internally inconsistent profile, and inconsistency is visible in the output.

The 6 Motivation Scales

The motivation component is a RIASEC interest inventory, again under Wonderlic’s own labels, with Holland’s original name alongside. It asks what kind of work you want rather than what you can do, and because the format is forced choice — three tasks, pick your favourite, no least-favourite — the output is a ranking. You cannot score highly on everything, which is the point.

Practical

Realistic

Hands-on, physically demanding work.

Investigative

Investigative

Analytical, scientific and intellectual positions.

Artistic

Artistic

Imaginative, creative, expressive work.

Supportive

Social

Teaching, providing care and serving others.

Enterprising

Enterprising

Persuasion, balancing a bottom line and generating revenue.

Traditional

Conventional

Structured, repeatable, predictable work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Wonderlic test?

Wonderlic has published short-form cognitive tests since 1937. Its current hiring product is Wonderlic Select, formerly WonScore, which bundles three components: cognitive ability, personality and motivation. The cognitive component is 50 questions in 12 minutes covering simple math, basic logic, language comprehension, spatial reasoning and pattern identification.

How is the Wonderlic scored?

Not by counting correct answers. Wonderlic weights each question by its difficulty and by the impact of guessing, and states that this is more precise than a raw total. Since the questions get progressively harder, the heavier weights are in the second half of the paper, so which items you got right matters and not only how many.

How long do I get per question?

About 14.4 seconds: 12 minutes divided across 50 questions. That is the tightest per-item budget of any test on this site, and it is what makes an otherwise unremarkable set of questions difficult.

Should I guess or leave items blank?

Nobody outside Wonderlic can answer that with confidence. Wonderlic says its weighting accounts for the impact of guessing but does not publish how, so any prep site quoting the expected value of a guess is inventing it. The advice the published facts do support is to keep moving: the marks are concentrated in the later, harder items, so reaching more of them is where your score comes from.

What is a good Wonderlic score?

There is no published universal benchmark, and because the score is weighted rather than a raw count, a target expressed as "questions right" would be the wrong unit anyway. Employers set their own thresholds, and with Select the cognitive score is combined with personality and motivation according to a job profile Wonderlic builds from O*NET data. So the same score can clear one role and not another at the same employer.

What is the difference between Wonderlic Select and WonScore?

They are the same product. Select is the current name; WonScore is what it was called previously. If an employer or a recruiter uses the older name, expect the same three components.

What does the personality component measure?

Five Factor personality, reported on 5 scales that Wonderlic labels Cooperation, Dependability, Stress Tolerance, Sociability, Open-mindedness. Wonderlic states that Dependability and Stress Tolerance are the most predictive of performance across nearly all roles. It is untimed and there are no right answers.

How does the motivation component work?

It is RIASEC-based and forced choice: 58 questions, about 20 minutes, each showing three work tasks. You pick the one you would most prefer, and there is no least-preferred selection to make. The result is a relative ranking of what kind of work holds your attention, not a mark.

Which of these tests is free?

Wonderlic Cognitive Ability. The personality and motivation simulations are paid and unlock together.

Which employers use the Wonderlic?

Wonderlic publishes its own customer logos, and they include Allstate, Delta, Nestle, Bosch, Berkshire Hathaway, Panera Bread, Medline, Manpower, Landstar and Bojangles. That establishes a customer relationship, and no more than that: it does not tell you which Wonderlic product a particular role uses, which of the three Select components you will be sent, or what score the employer wants. Confirm with the recruiter who invited you.

Is this the test from the NFL Draft?

Same publisher, same short-form format, different context. The NFL association is why most people have heard of Wonderlic, but what an employer sends you is a hiring assessment, and draft-score trivia is not a useful benchmark for it.

How is the Wonderlic different from the CCAT?

They look alike and score differently. Both are 50 questions with one short clock, but the CCAT is a raw count with no penalty for wrong answers, which makes items interchangeable and guessing free. The Wonderlic weights items by difficulty and gets harder as it goes, and it allows 12 minutes rather than 15. Pacing to reach the back half matters more on the Wonderlic than on any test we cover.

Companies That Use Wonderlic

Wonderlic has been selling short-form cognitive tests since 1937 and is the most recognised assessment brand in the United States, largely thanks to its long association with the NFL Draft. In hiring it is used most heavily for high-volume roles, where a 12-minute test is attractive precisely because it is short.

Every company below appears in Wonderlic’s own published customer logos, so the relationship is first-party. What that does NOT tell you is which Wonderlic product a given role uses, or which of the three Wonderlic Select components you will be asked to complete - a large employer may use the cognitive test for one job family and the full Select bundle for another. Score cutoffs are set by the employer and are essentially never published.
