Walmart Assessment Test and Virtual Job Tryout
Many Walmart and Sam's Club hourly applications include an online assessment. Walmart's own selection team has written about how it was built, what it measures and how stores use the score, which makes it one of the better-documented retail assessments in the US.
What the Walmart Assessment Is
Walmart’s own hiring page says that some positions require the completion of assessments before you can be considered, and that once you finish your application and any required assessments, a screen confirms you have completed every step. It does not name the assessment.
Walmart’s selection team has, though. In a 2020 article for the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, David Futrell and Josh Allen, who led selection and assessment at Walmart, described the Retail Associate Assessment, used for hourly associates in Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs. They wrote that Walmart chose Modern Hire, the company behind the Virtual Job Tryout, to build and validate it. HireVue bought Modern Hire in 2023, and HireVue’s own case study described the result as a Virtual Job Tryout customized for Walmart’s retail associate positions.
What It Measures
Walmart’s team called it a multimethod assessment, built from a job analysis and checked in a validation study with more than 1,000 current associates. The kinds of content they named are:
- Work history and background questions (biodata), such as how you have handled work or school in the past.
- Situational judgment: what you would do in realistic store situations.
- Work samples: short tasks that resemble the job itself.
- Work style: your preferences and approach to work. Teamwork content was added later to reflect how store jobs have changed.
HireVue’s case study listed the performance drivers it reports on for retail jobs as customer service, reliability, managing priorities and pursuing excellence.
How the Score Is Used
This is the part most guides skip, and it is the most useful thing to know. According to Walmart’s team, the scoring algorithm was balanced evenly between predicting job performance and predicting whether a new hire would stay. Results are reported in bands, and when they looked at hiring patterns, significantly more hires came from the top band than from lower ones. Hiring managers said the score was one of the most important factors in deciding who to interview.
In practice that means the assessment works less like a pass or fail and more like a ranking. A lower band does not necessarily end your application, but hires come disproportionately from the top one.
Is There an Answer Key?
No, and the sites that sell “Walmart assessment answers” are selling something that cannot work the way they claim. Two reasons, both from Walmart’s own description:
- The retention part of the score was built by testing background questions against which hires actually stayed. Nobody outside Walmart knows which answers that model rewards, and it has been reweighted and renormed since launch.
- Walmart’s team has researched how to spot applicants who fake their answers, and reported that faking is itself a strong predictor of leaving early. Answering the way you think they want, rather than the way you are, is a risk rather than a shortcut.
What does help:
- Read the job description first, so you know what a good day in that role looks like.
- For scenario questions, think about the customer and the team together. Most options are plausible; the better ones solve the problem and keep you reliable.
- Answer questions about yourself honestly and consistently, without second-guessing what the “right” profile might be.
- Do it in one sitting somewhere quiet, on a device with a reliable connection.
The Walmart Hiring Process, Step by Step
- Apply online. Walmart says a first application takes 20 to 25 minutes and does not need a resume, though you will enter your job history.
- Complete any required assessment. Some positions require it before you can be considered. A confirmation screen tells you when every step is done.
- Interview. Walmart says you will be told if you are not selected for an interview. For interview preparation, see our STAR method guide.
- Offer and onboarding. For hourly roles, your application stays in Walmart’s system for 60 days, and you can add other positions in that time.
Walmart also offers interactive job simulations on its careers site. Those are a preview of the role, not the assessment, and are worth a few minutes before you apply.
Practice the Format

Where Walmart Hires
The Retail Associate Assessment was documented for store and Sam’s Club hourly roles. Walmart’s careers site also recruits in the areas below; whether a given role has an assessment is something your application will tell you.
- Store associates: cashier, stocking, online pickup and delivery, and departments
- Sam’s Club associates
- Supply chain: distribution and fulfillment centers, and drivers
- Pharmacy and health roles
- Corporate, technology, and student and graduate programs
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Walmart use HireVue?
Walmart’s store assessment was built by Modern Hire, which HireVue now owns, and HireVue presented it as a custom Virtual Job Tryout until late 2025. Walmart’s own pages today say only that some roles require an assessment.
How long does the Walmart assessment take?
Walmart’s team reported an average completion time under 15 minutes after the assessment was shortened. Allow longer so you are not rushing.
Can I retake the Walmart assessment?
Walmart does not publish a retake rule that we could find. Prep sites disagree with each other, some saying 60 days and some six months, so we are not repeating either. What Walmart does say is that an hourly application stays active for 60 days.
Is it pass or fail?
Walmart’s team described score bands rather than a single pass mark, with more hires coming from the top band than from the others. Treat it as a ranking.
Are your tests the real Walmart assessment?
No. They are independent practice exercises in the same formats. They contain no real test items and are not supplied, reviewed or endorsed by Walmart or HireVue.
