AT&T Assessment Tests and Virtual Job Tryouts
AT&T is unusually open about testing. Its careers site lists the pre-employment test for each job family, with a study guide for most of them, and several of those tests are Virtual Job Tryouts. This page walks through them by role.
AT&T Tells You Which Test You Will Sit
AT&T’s study-guides page says it may use a pre-employment test to make sure your skills, knowledge and abilities are right for the job, and that these can include multiple-choice tests, performance tests, interviews and role-play scenarios. You are told which tests a job needs during the hiring process.
The page then lists the tests by job family: Call Center, Retail, Sales and Technician. That is your best source. Find your job family, open the guide for your test, and read it before you do anything else on this page.
The Virtual Job Tryouts
Six of the tests on AT&T’s list are Virtual Job Tryouts, or VJTs. The Virtual Job Tryout is a registered product originally built by Shaker International, later Modern Hire, and owned by HireVue since 2023. AT&T’s guides use the product name but do not name the vendor.
Call Center VJT (CC VJT)
AT&T’s July 2022 guide describes four sections, of which only the second is timed:
- Call center scenarios, where you pick the response you would be most likely and least likely to give from four options. You cannot skip or go back.
- A listening task: you hear calls between an agent and a customer, check that what the caller says matches the records, and watch your team’s satisfaction rating, telling the supervisor when it drops below 90%. You can replay the audio, but the section is timed.
- Questions about your work experience and background.
- Paired statements about your preferred work style.
The guide recommends blocking 35 minutes in one place and 45 minutes in another. Plan for 45.
Retail Sales Consultant VJT (RSC VJT)
The November 2022 guide describes four sections with no time limit and suggests 25 minutes: retail scenarios answered most and least likely, an inventory task where you compare the product details on a shelf label against a reference and mark each one Match or Error, then background questions and work-style statements.
Customer Service Rep VJT (VJT-CSR)
The longest of the set. AT&T’s guide says to block an hour and a half. Its first section has three exercises: handling a customer call while recording what the customer tells you, basic problem solving like the issues representatives regularly solve, and scenario questions answered most and least likely. That section is untimed but should take about 45 minutes. This guide dates from 2017, so check it against your invitation.
Premises-Wire Technician VJT (PT VJT)
The September 2023 guide describes five sections and suggests 55 minutes. It opens with on-the-job scenarios, then troubleshooting questions where exactly one component is broken, then questions on mechanical principles, followed by further sections described in the guide.
Business Sales VJT and In Home Expert VJT
AT&T also lists VJTs for business sales and for field sales representatives and In Home Experts. The In Home Expert guide is the newest of the six, dated March 2024. Both have their own guides on the same page.
AT&T’s Other Tests
Many AT&T jobs use tests the company built itself rather than a VJT. We do not simulate these, and we would rather say so than point you at the wrong thing. Two examples from the guides:
- Basic Ability Test (BAT). For clerical and technical support roles. It measures information processing, problem solving, multitasking and customer service in two sections and takes about 30 minutes.
- Technical/Mechanical Test III (TMT III).For technician jobs. It is computer adaptive, so questions adjust to your earlier answers, and AT&T suggests blocking an hour and 15 minutes. One section asks 21 mechanical questions about drawings, with 45 seconds for each; an unanswered question counts as wrong. Another has 50 paired statements about work orientation and customer service.
The list also includes knowledge tests for specific technician titles, a Customer Service Representative Test in proctored and unproctored versions, role-play assessments for sales, and structured interviews. For the general skills, see our guides to mechanical reasoning and error checking.
Is There an Answer Key?
No. AT&T’s own Call Center VJT guide says there are no specific materials to study, and that paying close attention to the instructions is what improves your chances. That is honest, and it tells you what is scored:
- Scenario questionsare scored, so some responses are better than others. Practice helps you read four plausible options quickly and pick the one that fixes the customer’s problem without breaking a rule.
- Checking tasks, like the call-listening and inventory sections, reward accuracy, and in the timed Call Center section, speed as well. Familiarity with the format helps here more than anywhere else.
- Background and work-style questionsdescribe you. AT&T’s guides ask you to answer them candidly and go with your first reaction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does AT&T use HireVue?
AT&T’s own study guides name six Virtual Job Tryouts, and the Virtual Job Tryout is a HireVue product. The guides themselves never mention HireVue, and many AT&T roles use AT&T’s own tests instead.
Can I retake an AT&T test?
The Call Center VJT, Premises-Wire Technician VJT and Basic Ability Test guides each say you may retest after six months. The Call Center guide adds that standards are updated from time to time, so you may have to meet new ones.
Is it done online or in person?
The Call Center VJT is taken online at a time and place you choose, on a computer, tablet or phone. Some other AT&T tests come in proctored versions. Your invitation will say.
Are your tests the real AT&T assessment?
No. They are independent practice exercises in the same formats. They contain no real test items and are not supplied, reviewed or endorsed by AT&T or HireVue.
