Target Assessment Test and Video Interview

Target tells applicants that some roles include an assessment as a step in the application, and that some business areas use recorded video interviews. Both run through HireVue. Target does not say which HireVue assessment it uses, so this page sticks to what Target does say.

What the Target Assessment Is

Target’s hiring-process page says some applications may require supplemental information, like work availability or a quick assessment regarding job-related skills. Its careers FAQ adds that some roles include an assessment as a step in the application process, and that technical problems with it should go to Target’s assessment vendor through a linked form. That form is on HireVue’s candidate help center.

So the vendor is HireVue. What Target does not say is which HireVue assessment it is, which roles get it, or what it contains, and we are not going to fill that gap with guesses.

Two different HireVue steps
Target uses HireVue for two separate things: the assessment inside some applications, and the recorded video interview later on. Its FAQ treats them as separate questions with separate help routes. They need different preparation, so it is worth knowing which one you are looking at.

Which HireVue Assessment Could It Be?

HireVue sells two kinds of assessment that fit a “quick assessment regarding job-related skills”:

  • Game-based assessments. Short, timed games measuring things like numerical intuition, spatial reasoning and memory. If your invitation mentions games or a series of short exercises, this is it.
  • A Virtual Job Tryout. Scenario questions and tasks set in the job, plus questions about your background and work style. If it mentions a job tryout or job simulation, this is it.

Check the invitation, or the pending task in your Workday Candidate Home, for a product name. If there is none, asking your recruiter is reasonable.

The Recorded Video Interview

Target’s recorded video interview page is detailed, and everything below comes from it:

  • The invitation comes from interviews@hirevue.com with the subject “Congrats! You’ve been selected to interview with Target.” Allow three hours after you are told you are moving forward, and check spam folders.
  • You can use a phone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone. Chrome is recommended on a computer.
  • You can practice as many times as you like before you start, and nobody sees practice answers.
  • Watch the introduction video in full, because it cannot be replayed. You can re-record an answer, and Target only sees the final one you submit.
  • Plan for about 30 minutes in total.
  • Once you submit, there are no retakes. A hiring manager or recruiter reviews your answers alongside your resume and application, and Target aims to reply within five business days.
  • Target expects answers that reflect your own knowledge and experience, without help from AI tools, unless an approved accommodation applies.

For practice answering out loud to a camera, see our guides to passing a video interview and HireVue interview questions, and the STAR method guide.

The Target Hiring Process

  1. Apply online through Workday, by hand, from your resume, from a previous Target application or from LinkedIn.
  2. Supplemental steps for some applications, such as availability or the skills assessment.
  3. Recruiting. The recruitment team reviews your application and may get in touch, or you may simply receive emails.
  4. Interviews by phone or video call, in person, or recorded on HireVue. You may have more than one.
  5. Offer, usually by email with instructions to open it in Workday.

If you need an accommodation for the application or interview, Target asks store candidates to call (800) 440-0680 or contact their recruiter, and headquarters and supply chain candidates to email candidate.accommodations@HRHelp.Target.com.

Is There an Answer Key?

No. A game-based assessment measures how you perform on the task itself, and the questions about you in a job tryout describe you rather than test you. What helps:

  • Play practice games until the controls feel familiar, so the real thing measures your ability rather than your first encounter with the format.
  • For scenario questions, think about the guest and the team together. Read the job description first so you know what Target values in the role.
  • Answer questions about yourself honestly and consistently.
  • Take it somewhere quiet, on a device with a stable connection.

Where Target Hires

Target does not say which of these get the assessment or the recorded interview. Your application will tell you.

  • Store hourly roles and store leadership
  • Supply chain hourly roles and supply chain leadership
  • Corporate roles at headquarters, including Target Tech
  • Internships, entry-level roles and the Financial Leadership Development Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Target use HireVue?

Yes, on Target’s own pages. Its recorded video interviews run on HireVue, and its FAQ sends assessment problems to a HireVue help form. Target does not name the assessment product.

Can I retake the Target video interview?

Not once you have submitted it. Before that, you can practice without limit and re-record answers.

Can I reapply if I was not selected?

Target says you can reapply to a similar or different job at any time, but you may not be able to reapply to the same job.

Are your tests the real Target assessment?

No. They are independent practice exercises in HireVue’s formats. They contain no real test items and are not supplied, reviewed or endorsed by Target or HireVue.

CogniPrep is an independent practice platform. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Target Corporation or HireVue.
