About the Vista Equity Partners Assessment
Vista Equity Partners is a private equity firm that invests in enterprise software. Its association with the CCAT is one of the most consistently reported in pre-employment testing: candidate reports and assessment-preparation resources describe a 50-question, 15-minute Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test used both for roles at the firm itself and for roles at companies in its portfolio, frequently alongside a Criteria personality questionnaire, the Employee Personality Profile (EPP).
Be clear about where that comes from. Vista does not publish its assessment process, so this account rests on candidate reports and third-party prep sites rather than on a first-party description of the kind Crossover provides. It is well attested and repeated across independent sources, which makes it a sound basis for preparation, but it is not a confirmed process. Treat the CCAT as the most likely test rather than a certainty, and confirm with your recruiter.
Why a Private Equity Firm Screens on Cognitive Aptitude
A software buyout model depends on people who can arrive at an unfamiliar business and be useful quickly. Cognitive aptitude tests are built to predict exactly that: how fast someone acquires, organises and applies new information. That is why a 15-minute test with an objective raw score is attractive to a firm hiring both into its own investment and operating teams and into leadership roles at the companies it owns — it produces one comparable number across very different candidate backgrounds, at almost no cost per applicant.
If You Are Applying to a Portfolio Company
This is the situation most candidates are actually in. Reports describe the same CCAT-and-personality screen appearing at Vista-owned software companies, so an invitation to a 15-minute cognitive test can arrive from a company you did not associate with private equity at all. Two consequences: first, the test is the same test, so preparation transfers exactly; second, ownership changes over time, and a company that used the CCAT under one owner may not use it under the next. CogniPrep has separate guides for two commonly cited examples, TIBCO and PowerSchool. Whatever the name on the invitation, check the assessment with the recruiter for that specific role.
What the CCAT Actually Contains
Criteria publishes the format. There are 50 questions and 15 minutes, no calculators are allowed, and three question types are interleaved rather than grouped into sections, so the type switches beneath you as you work:
- Verbal— antonyms and synonyms, word analogies, and how context fixes a word's precise meaning.
- Math and logic— basic algebra, proportions, number series and word problems, all solvable by mental arithmetic.
- Spatial reasoning— rotating and flipping shapes in your head, completing patterns, and identifying the figure that does not belong.
How It Is Scored, and What That Means for Strategy
The employer receives a raw score — the number of questions you answered correctly — and a percentile against everyone else who has taken the test. Criteria reports that fewer than 1% of candidates answer all 50 questions and that the average test taker gets 24 right.
- Never leave anything blank. There is no penalty for a wrong answer; Criteria's own advice is to guess and move on. A blank is a guaranteed zero, whereas a guess among five options is worth 0.2 marks in expectation. Ten abandoned questions are two marks you gave away for nothing.
- Triage, do not try to finish. Almost nobody finishes and the average is 24 out of 50, so completion is not the objective. Bank every question you can answer quickly and abandon anything that would cost you a minute.
- Ignore the idea of a 50% pass mark. Employers using the CCAT set a target percentile or raw-score cutoff that varies by role family, and those cutoffs are not published. For a firm screening into investment, operating and leadership roles, the bar for one job family tells you nothing about another.
Where the CCAT Is Reported at Vista
At the Firm
- Private Equity / Investment
- Vista Consulting Group (operating)
- Finance and Operations
- Internships and early careers
At Portfolio Companies
- Software Engineering
- Product and Programme Management
- Sales and Customer Success
- Leadership and functional hires
These groupings reflect where candidates have reported the test, not a published Vista policy. Each portfolio company runs its own hiring, employers change assessment vendors between cycles, and the exact assessment for your role should be confirmed with the recruiter who invited you.
Top Tips for the Vista CCAT
Decide your abandonment rule before the clock starts
At under 18 seconds a question, the single decision that most affects your score is how long you tolerate being stuck. Fix the rule in advance — a hard ceiling of roughly 30 seconds, then guess and move — so that in the moment you are executing a plan rather than making a judgement call under time pressure.
Answer the personality questionnaire honestly
If an EPP arrives with the CCAT, it has no right answers and nothing to revise. Its value to you is familiarity with the format so you answer at a natural pace. Trying to construct an ideal profile tends to produce internal inconsistency, which is itself visible in the output.
Do the arithmetic without a calculator
Calculators are not allowed. Percentages, ratios, averages and one-variable algebra need to be automatic, because there is no time to reconstruct a method. If you have not done mental arithmetic since school, this is the highest-return thing to practise.
Find your cheapest marks
Most people are markedly faster at one of the three question types. Because the types are interleaved, knowing which one is yours lets you commit instantly on your strong type and abandon your weak type without deliberating. Practising each type separately is how you find out.
Sit it in real conditions
One sitting, one screen, no interruptions, no notes. A 15-minute test punishes disruption more than a long one does, because there is no later stretch in which to recover the lost minute.
Practise the Exact Tests
The CCAT is practised here as its three sections: 18 verbal, 18 math and logic and 14 spatial items, 50 in total, each drill clocked at the real paper's pace of 18 seconds per item — 324, 324 and 252 seconds. Sit the three back to back and you have covered a full paper's worth of items at the real pace; sit one on its own and you can repeat it tonight, which is what actually moves a score. CCAT Verbal is free.
CCAT Verbal
18 questions · 5-6 minutes · free
The verbal third of the paper - antonyms, analogies and meaning-in-context items - and the one Criteria test you can sit here for free.
CCAT Math & Logic
18 questions · 5-6 minutes
Algebra, proportions, series and word problems with no calculator, as the real test runs them.
CCAT Spatial Reasoning
14 questions · 4-5 minutes
Rotations, flips, pattern completion and odd-one-out items, usually the fastest marks available.
Companion Criteria tests
EPP (Employee Personality Profile)
Untimed · 15-20 minutes
Criteria’s work personality questionnaire. Candidate reports pair it with the CCAT in Vista processes.
UCAT (Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test)
40 questions · 20 minutes
Criteria’s Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test, a language-reduced sibling of the CCAT.
CBST (Criteria Basic Skills Test)
40 questions · 20 minutes

Is it confirmed that Vista uses the CCAT?
Vista does not publish its assessment process. The association is well attested through candidate reports and assessment-preparation resources, consistently enough that the CCAT is the sensible test to prepare for, but we describe it as reported rather than confirmed. Ask your recruiter what you will be sent.
What score do I need for Vista?
No cutoff is published, and employers using the CCAT set targets by role family rather than one company-wide number. Do not assume 50% is a pass. The average test taker gets 24 of 50 right, so a score in the twenties is unremarkable and competitive processes screen well above it.
Will a Vista portfolio company send the same test?
Candidate reports describe the same CCAT-and-personality screen appearing at Vista-owned software companies, so it is likely, and preparation transfers exactly if it does. Each company runs its own hiring and ownership changes over time, so confirm rather than assume.
Should I try to answer all 50 questions?
No. Fewer than 1% of candidates do, and chasing completion is how strong candidates lose marks: rushing questions you could have got right in order to reach questions you were never going to finish. Answer everything you touch, including guesses, and let the paper run out.
Is the CCAT the same as the school CCAT?
No. The test employers send is the Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test from Criteria Corp, a workplace hiring assessment. It shares an acronym with a school cognitive abilities test but is a different instrument with a different format, so make sure you are practising the 50-question, 15-minute workplace version.
