About the PowerSchool Assessment

PowerSchool builds cloud software for K-12 education — student information systems, enrolment, assessment and analytics used by school districts across North America and beyond. Candidates applying to PowerSchool report an early screening stage consisting of a 50-question, 15-minute Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test, generally accompanied by a personality questionnaire.

The sourcing is third-party. PowerSchool does not publish its assessment process, so this account comes from candidate reports and assessment-preparation resources rather than from the company. Prepare for the CCAT on that basis, and confirm with your recruiter what you will actually be sent.

Why the CCAT Appears Here, and One Caveat

PowerSchool spent most of its recent history in the Vista Equity Partners portfolio: Vista acquired it in 2015, Onex took a stake in 2018, and the company went public in 2021. Vista is the most widely reported CCAT user in private equity and applies the same cognitive-plus-personality screen across the companies it owns, which is the most likely explanation for the CCAT showing up in PowerSchool hiring. Our Vista Equity Partners guide covers that pattern.

The caveat matters. Bain Capital completed a take-private acquisition of PowerSchool on 1 October 2024, with Vista and Onex retaining minority interests. A hiring practice inherited from a former majority owner is exactly the kind of thing a new owner may keep, change or drop, so older candidate reports are weaker evidence for PowerSchool than they would be for a company whose ownership has not moved. Prepare for the CCAT because it is the most likely assessment and preparation is cheap, but treat confirming the stage with the recruiter as a necessary step rather than a courtesy.

What the CCAT Actually Contains

Criteria publishes the format. There are 50 questions and 15 minutes, no calculators are allowed, and three question types are interleaved rather than grouped into sections, so the type switches beneath you as you work:

  • Verbal— antonyms and synonyms, word analogies, and how context fixes a word's precise meaning.
  • Math and logic— basic algebra, proportions, number series and word problems, all solvable by mental arithmetic.
  • Spatial reasoning— rotating and flipping shapes in your head, completing patterns, and identifying the figure that does not belong.

Nothing in the test is about education, curriculum or PowerSchool's products. It is a general aptitude measure, so subject-matter expertise in K-12 software neither helps nor hurts you here.

How It Is Scored, and What That Means for Strategy

The employer receives a raw score — the number of questions you answered correctly — and a percentile against everyone else who has taken the test. Criteria reports that fewer than 1% of candidates answer all 50 questions and that the average test taker gets 24 right.

  • Never leave anything blank. There is no penalty for a wrong answer; Criteria's own advice is to guess and move on. A blank is a guaranteed zero, while a guess among five options is worth 0.2 marks in expectation. Ten skipped questions are two marks given away.
  • Triage, do not try to finish. Almost nobody finishes and the average is 24 out of 50, so completion is not the goal. Bank the questions you can answer quickly and abandon anything that would cost you a minute.
  • There is no 50% pass mark. Employers set a target percentile or raw-score cutoff by role family, and none is published for PowerSchool. Maximise raw score rather than aiming at a threshold you have guessed at.

The Personality Questionnaire

Candidate reports describe a personality stage alongside the cognitive test; where the CCAT is used, that companion is typically Criteria's Employee Personality Profile. It has no right answers and nothing to revise, so it is not a second test to pass. What practice gives you is familiarity with the format, so you answer at a natural pace instead of second-guessing individual items. Attempting to construct an ideal profile usually produces inconsistency across related questions, and inconsistency is visible in the report the employer receives.

PowerSchool Roles Where the CCAT Is Reported

Technical

  • Software Engineering
  • Implementation and Professional Services
  • Technical Support
  • Data and Analytics

Commercial & Corporate

  • Sales and Account Management
  • Customer Success
  • Product and Programme Management
  • Marketing, Finance and Operations

These groupings reflect the roles candidates discuss, not a published PowerSchool policy. Employers change assessment vendors between hiring cycles, and PowerSchool's change of ownership makes that more likely rather than less, so confirm the exact assessment for your role with the recruiter.

Top Tips for the PowerSchool CCAT

Ask what the assessment is before you prepare narrowly

Because the CCAT association here predates the current ownership, a single question to your recruiter — which assessment, how long, is there a personality questionnaire — is worth more than any amount of inference from older candidate reports.

Decide your abandonment rule in advance

Under 18 seconds a question, how long you tolerate being stuck matters more than how much you know. Fix a ceiling of roughly 30 seconds, then guess and move. Criteria itself advises guessing once you have spent a minute on an item.

Rebuild calculator-free arithmetic

Calculators are not allowed. Percentages, ratios, averages and one-variable algebra need to be automatic, because at this pace there is no time to reconstruct a method from first principles.

Find your cheapest marks

Few people are equally fast at words, numbers and shapes. Since the types are interleaved, knowing which is your strongest lets you commit instantly there and abandon your weakest type without deliberating. Practise each type separately to find out which is which.

Sit it in real conditions

One uninterrupted 15-minute block, no notes, no second screen. A short test punishes disruption disproportionately, because there is no later stretch in which to make up the lost minute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PowerSchool's use of the CCAT confirmed?

Not first-party. PowerSchool does not publish its hiring assessments; the association comes from candidate reports and assessment-preparation resources, and it matches the pattern reported across companies formerly owned by Vista Equity Partners. Confirm with your recruiter.

Does the change of ownership affect the process?

It might. Bain Capital completed its take-private acquisition of PowerSchool on 1 October 2024, with Vista and Onex keeping minority interests. Because the CCAT arrived with the previous majority owner, reports from earlier hiring cycles are less reliable than they would otherwise be. The CCAT remains the most likely assessment, and confirming is quick.

Do education roles need education knowledge for the test?

No. The CCAT measures general cognitive aptitude through verbal, math and logic, and spatial items. Nothing in it relates to curriculum, districts or PowerSchool's products; any product or domain assessment would be a separate stage.

What score does PowerSchool require?

No cutoff is published, and employers using the CCAT set targets by role family. Do not assume 50% is a pass. The average test taker gets 24 of 50 right, so a score in the twenties is ordinary and competitive roles screen above it.

How should I handle the personality questionnaire?

Answer honestly and at a natural pace. It has no right answers, so there is nothing to revise, and trying to present an idealised profile tends to produce inconsistency between related items that shows up in the report. Practising the format simply removes the hesitation.
