Kroger HireVue Assessment Practice

HireVue lists Kroger among its customers. What it does not do is say which of its three quite different products Kroger uses, and we are not going to guess on its behalf. Here is how to find out from your own invitation, and what to practice for each.

What the Evidence Is, Precisely

Kroger is named as a customer on HireVue’s own customers page, and HireVue maintains a case-study entry for it. That is first-party evidence and it is current, which makes it worth more than the average prep-site claim.

It is also less informative than it sounds, and you deserve to know why. We opened the Kroger case-study page twice, once normally and once by pulling the raw HTML apart, and there is no article there: the page renders a heading and a “Quick Facts” label with nothing underneath. So the citation supports one sentence and no more. Kroger is a HireVue customer. It does not say which product, which roles, or where in the process it sits.

Why that gap actually matters
HireVue is not one thing. It sells a recorded video interview, a battery of short game-based assessments, and the Virtual Job Tryout, and they demand completely different preparation. Guessing wrong means preparing for the wrong thing entirely. Most sites paper over this; we would rather tell you to read your invitation.

The Three Things Your Invitation Could Mean

1. A recorded video interview

By far HireVue’s best-known product, and many employers use only this. You record answers to questions on your own, usually with a short preparation window per question and a capped answer length, with no interviewer present. If your invitation mentions a webcam, a microphone check, or practice questions, this is what you have.

Preparation for this lives on our interview practice section rather than on the games hub.

2. Game-based assessments

A set of short, timed games measuring things like numerical intuition, spatial reasoning, working memory, attention and emotion recognition. Several are adaptive, meaning the difficulty tracks your performance, so the experience of finding it hard is normal and not a signal that you are doing badly. If your invitation mentions games, a series of short exercises, or takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes, this is it.

3. The Virtual Job Tryout

A longer, realistic job preview built around the specific role, mixing situational judgement with work-sample tasks. HireVue acquired this product line when it bought Modern Hire in May 2023. It is used heavily in high-volume hourly and customer-facing hiring, which makes it a plausible fit for grocery retail, though nothing published ties it to Kroger specifically.

How to Tell Which One You Have

  • Read the estimated time. A video interview is usually quoted per question or as 15 to 30 minutes; a games battery around 20 to 30; a Virtual Job Tryout often 25 to 40.
  • Look for equipment requirements. Webcam and microphone checks mean a video interview. Games and tryouts generally do not need a camera.
  • Look for the product name.Invitations frequently say “Game-Based Assessment” or “Virtual Job Tryout” outright.
  • Ask the recruiter. It is a completely reasonable question and the answer costs you nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Kroger use HireVue?

HireVue names Kroger as a customer on its own website, so yes, there is a documented relationship. What is not documented anywhere we could open is which product, for which roles.

Will I have to record a video interview for a store job?

We cannot tell you. Your invitation will say, and it is the only source that applies to your application. If it mentions a webcam check, plan for a recorded interview.

Are the HireVue games adaptive?

Several of them are, meaning difficulty follows your performance. The practical consequence is that it should feel hard for everyone, so finding it difficult is not evidence you are failing.

Can I retake it?

Retake policies are set by the employer, not by HireVue, and Kroger does not publish one that we could find. Ask your recruiter rather than assuming either way.

Are your tests the real Kroger assessment?

No. These are independent practice exercises matching the published formats of HireVue’s products. They contain no real test items and are not supplied, reviewed or endorsed by Kroger or HireVue.

CogniPrep is an independent practice platform. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Kroger or HireVue. Kroger is a trademark of its respective owner and is used here for identification and descriptive purposes only. The association described here rests on Kroger being named as a customer on HireVue’s own customers page; HireVue’s corresponding case-study page carried no article body when we checked it in September 2026, so no claim is made about which HireVue product Kroger uses. Hiring processes change and vary by role, so confirm what your own process involves with whoever invited you.
