How Emotify works
Emotify is an ability-based measure: it assesses how accurately you perceive, understand and manage emotions in set tasks. Criteria’s help centre describes three interactive tasks that together take about 20 minutes on any device, with real-time feedback during the tasks on how you are doing.
In Matching Faces you identify the emotion shown on a person’s face, quickly: 30 rounds, 3 seconds each. In Emotional Ties you read everyday situations and predict their emotional consequences, over 10 rounds of up to a minute. In Emotions in Action you choose the most effective action for managing a range of emotions, over 14 rounds of up to a minute.
Emotify 1.0 and 2.0
Emotions in Action is the newer task. Criteria added it in Emotify 2.0 to measure managing emotions, the third ability in the Cascading Model of Emotional Intelligence on which Emotify is based. Jobs set up before 28 October 2021 can still use version 1.0, which has only the perceiving and understanding tasks.
Criteria says it removed redundant items when it added the third task, so the overall length stayed at 20 minutes.
How it is scored
You receive an overall percentile against Criteria’s global norm group, where 86 means you scored better than 86% of people who have taken it, plus sub-scores for Perceiving, Understanding and Managing Emotion. Each sub-score comes from one of the three tasks.
Criteria recommends Emotify for managers, future leaders, graduate recruitment, sales, customer service and roles that involve emotional labour. Employers can choose to send you a feedback report once you finish.
How our practice version works
Our Emotify practice covers Matching Faces only. You see 24 faces and choose the emotion from seven buttons, with 10 seconds per face and a four-minute clock overall, which is far more time per face than the real task’s 3 seconds.
We do not have practice versions of Emotional Ties or Emotions in Action, so treat our game as a warm-up for the perception task rather than a rehearsal of the whole assessment.
