Can You Cheat the Politie Cognitietest?
The police let you sit the cognitietest at home with nobody watching, because the result does not count until you have reproduced it under supervision.
Your home result is only valid once a short supervised verificatietoets confirms it, and that check starts at the level you reached at home. Help at home lifts you to a level you then have to hold in a room at a police location, and failing the check means sitting the full test again that same day.
The defence is a second sitting, and it starts where you finished
Most online tests defeat a shortcut with something about the questions. The police's cognitietest does some of that, but its real answer is written into the procedure. The test is sat at home, unsupervised, within seven days of registering. Then, on the selection day, you sit a short verificatietoets under supervision at a police location.
Two details make that check unusually hard to get past. First, the police say plainly that your cognitietest result is only valid once you have done the verificatietoets as well. Second, the check does not start from scratch: it steps in directly at the final level you reached at home. Whatever lifted you at home, you have to stand on it alone.
And failing it does not end the day quietly. The police offer the full cognitietest again, the same day, under supervision. A borrowed result does not save you a sitting. It adds one.
There is no paper to leak
The cognitietest is adaptive. You start with an easy item, a right answer brings a harder one and a wrong answer an easier one, and the police say there is no maximum number of items. Your score is how hard the items became. Two candidates sitting on the same evening see different items, and a list of answers from someone else's sitting answers questions you will never be asked.
Two of the three parts also take away the thing a shortcut usually relies on: options. On Letterpatronen you type two letters, and on Cijferpatronen you type a number. There is no list of five to check a half-remembered answer against, only a blank to fill.
The one rule worth knowing instead
The police's advice is three words long: vul altijd iets in. Always fill something in. An empty answer is marked wrong, a wrong guess costs nothing more, and when the ten-second bar fills the test moves on whether you have answered or not. That rule is worth more marks than any shortcut, and it is completely legitimate.
What actually moves a cognitietest result
Because the test is adaptive, the score is decided at the edge of your ability: the band where you start to miss. Practice pays off at exactly that edge. Learn the rule families that live in the harder bands, two series woven together, steps that grow, rows and columns in a table, and how to read an analogy in the right direction, until you can name the type of item in the first few seconds.
Then sit the whole thing once in one go. The real cognitietest is about 50 minutes of three different formats, and holding your attention across all three is part of the test. Our Politie practice tests run the three parts on their own and together, adaptive and with the same hidden clock.
