Talent Q puts a separate timer on every single question, which leaves no slack anywhere in the test to spend on a shortcut.
Each question has its own countdown, so time borrowed for a lookup is not borrowed from the test, it is taken from that question.
The clock is on each question, not on the test
Nearly every aptitude test gives you one timer for the whole paper. That creates slack: you can spend three minutes on a hard question and make it up on four easy ones. Every shortcut anyone has ever described depends on that slack existing, because looking something up has to be paid for out of time borrowed from somewhere.
Talent Q Elements removes it. Each question has its own countdown, and when it expires the test moves on whether you have answered or not. There is nowhere to borrow from. A candidate who spends 30 seconds switching windows has not spent 30 seconds of the test, they have spent a third of the only time that question was ever going to get.
Adaptive selection removes the shared paper
Elements is also adaptive. The difficulty of your next question depends on how you answered the last one, so the paper is built for you as you go. Two candidates sitting at the same moment take different tests, and neither could write anything useful down for the other afterwards.
This has a second consequence worth understanding, because it changes how you should read your own practice results. Your score is not the percentage you got right. It is the difficulty level you were able to sustain. A candidate who gets 60 percent right on very hard items has done better than one who gets 90 percent right on easy ones, which is why the test is designed to feel uncomfortable throughout.
The practice that actually transfers
The single most useful thing you can do is practise with per-question timing switched on. Candidates who have only ever practised against one overall clock arrive with the wrong instincts entirely: they triage, they leave questions to come back to, and they discover halfway through that neither of those is possible here.
Beyond that, work on the mechanics that save seconds inside a single question. Reading the question stem before the data table. Setting up a calculation in one step rather than three. Committing to an answer at the eight-second mark rather than the twelve. On a test that gives you a fresh, unforgiving window every time, those small habits are the whole game.
