Vodafone Assessment Practice: The Sova Blended Assessment
What Vodafone actually sends you, why there is no clock on it, and how to prepare for each section
What Vodafone uses, and how we know
Vodafone's hiring runs on Sova Assessment. That is not a deduction from sector norms: Sova publishes a Vodafone customer story naming the products used, in its own words, as “Assessments, Video Interviews, Virtual Assessment Centres”. The same story reports 65,000 candidates assessed in a six-month pilot across ten languages.
You will probably never see the word Sova. The assessment is white labelled, so it arrives in Vodafone's colours with Vodafone's logo. The giveaway is the domain: the candidate test player is hosted at sovaonline.com.
The three stages, and how they connect
Sova describes Vodafone's process as automatic progression: “higher-scoring candidates [are] automatically progressed through to video interviews (scored using AI) and a virtual assessment centre”, and candidates “log back into the same platform” for the assessment centre. That has a practical consequence. There is no human between stage one and stage two, so the online assessment decides on its own whether you go further.
- The blended online assessment. One sitting containing several activity types rather than separate tests on separate days. Which sections appear is configured by the employer.
- A video interview, scored by AI.Sova says that using AI to score video interviews at Vodafone “reduced the previously seen difference in interview scores for males and females as well as younger and older applicants, when using human assessors”. Useful thing to know: Sova states that time is not recorded on the video recording sections, so thinking before you speak costs you nothing there.
- A virtual assessment centre on the same platform. Sova does not recommend sitting this one on a phone, because the screen may be too small.
The thing to understand before you start: there is no clock
Sova's ability tests are not time limited by default and no countdown appears on screen. That is not the same as being untimed. Sova's own practitioner report states that “although the tests are not time-limited, the time taken to make a response is recorded and taken into account in the score”, and the candidate version of that report says your result reflects “how quickly you provided the correct answer”.
So the pace you set is being measured with nothing on screen to warn you. Work steadily, commit to an answer rather than stalling on one question, and remember that only the time on your correct answers feeds the score, so a fast wrong answer buys nothing.
What to expect in each section
Reasoning
Numerical reasoning against tables and charts, verbal reasoning as True, False or Cannot Say against a short passage, and logical reasoning over shape sequences. All three adapt: a run of correct answers routes you into a harder pool, and the difficulty you reach counts. Sova tells candidates to have a pen, paper and calculator to hand for the ability questions.
Situational judgement
Sova asks you to pick the best and the worst response to each scenario, not to rate every option from one to five. If you have practised SHL or Cubiks situational judgement tests, this is a different task, and the two picks are scored separately.
Personality questionnaire
A forced ranking grid: five statements against five columns from “Least like me” to “Most like me”, one per column and no ties. It reports 18 work traits and has no score. It does separately report how positively you presented yourself, which is the one way to do badly on it.
Practical preparation
Do it in one sitting
Sova tells candidates directly to “complete all tasks in one sitting, if possible”. If your connection drops, you can resume from the link in your invitation email, but plan for an uninterrupted block rather than relying on that.
Use the practice questions
Every section of the real assessment opens with at least one unscored practice question, and there are practice tasks on the candidate hub before you begin. They cost nothing, and they are the only place in the sitting where taking your time is free.
Set the desk up first
Pen, paper, calculator, a quiet room and a charged device. Sova's own guidance names the first three. Chrome is the recommended browser, and Sova notes that video recording does not work on Huawei devices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Vodafone online assessment timed?
There is usually no countdown on screen, and it is still timed. Sova records the time taken on every response and scores the time taken on each correct answer. A countdown exists as a feature an employer can switch on, so some deployments show one.
How long does the Vodafone assessment take?
Neither Vodafone nor Sova publishes a length, and it depends on which sections have been switched on for your role. Sova's own Early Careers bundle is described as 15 to 30 minutes in total; a fuller blended sitting with a video stage takes longer. Allow an uninterrupted hour.
Is the video interview scored by a human?
Sova offers both, and at Vodafone it describes AI-scored video interviews specifically. Re-recording is configurable per question, so whether you get a second take depends on how the employer has set it up.
What happens if I score well?
At Vodafone, Sova describes higher scorers being progressed automatically to the video interview and then the virtual assessment centre, on the same platform and with the same login. There is no human sift in between.
