Starbucks Assessment Test: Applicant Insights

Starbucks is refreshingly direct about its assessment. Its careers FAQ names it, says how long it takes, how long you have, and that it is not pass/fail. Here is what Starbucks says, and what that means for how you should approach it.

What Applicant Insights Is

Starbucks’ careers FAQ describes Applicant Insights as an online questionnaire that takes about 20 minutes, with no time limit, though Starbucks encourages you to finish it in one sitting on a computer or mobile device. It is aligned to job-related traits and skills, and Starbucks is clear that it does not assess everything the role needs, because some skills come from training and experience on the job.

Most importantly, Starbucks says there are no right or wrong answers and that it is not pass/fail. Its purpose is to help the hiring team get to know applicants and add information about job-related skills. It is one data point alongside your application, resume, qualifications and interview, and is never used on its own to make a hiring decision.

Who builds it
Starbucks does not name a vendor for Applicant Insights. Some prep sites say it is a particular commercial product, but we found nothing from Starbucks or any vendor that supports that, so we do not repeat it. We do not simulate Applicant Insights.

How It Works

  1. Apply. You get a “Thank you for Applying” message.
  2. Invitation. If you meet the basic requirements for the job, Starbucks emails an invitation to the address you applied with. Internal applicants get it at the email in Partner Central.
  3. Complete it within seven days. Starbucks sends reminders on the third and sixth days. Your application is not complete, and will not move forward, until you finish.
  4. Your answers carry over to future applications for the same job for 90 days.

Not every role requires Applicant Insights. Your application status on the Career Hub shows where you are. Starbucks also asks you to finish the whole process for one job before applying to another posting for the same job.

Is There an Answer Key?

No. Starbucks says outright that there are no right or wrong answers, so anyone selling Starbucks assessment answers is selling something Starbucks says does not exist. What the questionnaire does is describe you against the traits and skills the job needs. That shapes how to approach it:

  • Read the job description first.Starbucks’ own advice is that job descriptions outline what it is looking for. Knowing the role helps you answer from the right context.
  • Answer as yourself. With no right answers to aim for, honest and consistent answers are the sensible approach. Our guide to work-style questionnaires explains why.
  • Do it in one sitting. There is no clock, but Starbucks recommends finishing it at once.
  • Do not leave it to day seven. Missing the deadline stops the application.

The Interview

Starbucks publishes a Craft Your Path Planner on its hiring-process page and gives interview advice there. It recommends:

  • Reviewing the job description and the qualifications it asks for
  • Preparing a short introduction covering who you are, your experience and your goals
  • Getting familiar with behavioral interviewing and preparing examples that reflect the competencies of the role
  • Preparing three to five questions for the interviewer
  • Sending a thank-you note within 48 hours

Behavioral questions ask about real past situations, and our STAR method guide shows how to structure the examples Starbucks asks you to prepare. More in our interview practice section.

Where Starbucks Hires

Starbucks says not all roles require Applicant Insights and does not list which do. It recruits across:

  • Coffeehouses, where Starbucks says it is always accepting barista applications
  • Coffeehouse leadership
  • Roastery and Reserve locations
  • Manufacturing and distribution, including roasting plants
  • Corporate and technology roles at its support centers
  • Internships
