Can You Cheat Hogan Personality Assessments?
There is no high score on a Hogan profile, which is why answering to look impressive reliably makes it worse.
Both ends of every Hogan scale carry a risk, so there is no direction to fake in. Maxing out a trait reads as a warning, not a strength.
There is no direction to fake in
Aptitude tests have a correct answer and a wrong one, so the shape of a cheat is obvious even when it is impossible. Hogan does not work that way. The report an employer receives is a set of positions on scales, and each of those positions is interpreted against what the role actually needs. High is not better. High is different.
Take Prudence, which covers conscientiousness and rule following. A very low score suggests someone unreliable with detail. A very high score suggests someone inflexible, slow to move and uncomfortable with ambiguity. Neither end is the answer. A candidate who answers every conscientiousness item as emphatically as possible has not maximised anything, they have walked to one edge of a scale where the report has a caution written for them.
The questionnaire asks the same thing several ways
Each Hogan scale is built from many items that approach one underlying trait from different angles and in different words. That design exists for measurement reasons rather than security ones, but it has a security effect: a profile assembled item by item from whatever sounded best stops agreeing with itself once the phrasing changes.
You can feel this happening while you take it. Candidates who are constructing an answer rather than reporting one start hesitating, because they cannot remember which version of themselves they described three questions ago. The result is a profile with weak, muddled scale positions, which is the least useful thing you can hand a recruiter.
The stage after this one is where it unravels
Hogan profiles are frequently used to shape the interview that follows. The interviewer is handed themes to explore, often the exact areas your profile flagged. A candidate who described a version of themselves that does not exist then has to keep describing that person, live, to someone whose questions were written specifically to probe it.
How to actually prepare
There is no practice that raises a Hogan score, because there is no score. What preparation does is remove the two things that produce a bad profile: surprise, and deliberation. Read what each inventory covers so the questions are not a shock. Think honestly beforehand about how you behave when a project goes wrong, because that is the part candidates have never articulated and therefore answer badly. Then set aside a quiet half hour and answer at a steady pace without going back to revise.
