Mental Maths for Numerical Reasoning Tests: The Shortcuts Worth Learning

Percentage change, ratios, reverse percentages and estimation, done at the speed a numerical reasoning test requires. The handful of shortcuts that pay for themselves in one sitting.

Look at where the time goes on a numerical reasoning question. The calculation is the smallest slice. Most of the minute disappears into finding the right two numbers in a table with fourteen rows, and most of the marks are lost by candidates who found the right numbers and then took twenty seconds doing arithmetic that should have taken five. Both are fixable, and the arithmetic half is the easier fix.

Why a calculator does not solve this

Many numerical tests permit a calculator, and candidates conclude that arithmetic speed does not matter. Two problems with that. Some of the most common tests, including the Criteria CCAT and the Thomas Aptitude battery, do not allow one at all. And even where a calculator is allowed, reaching for it has a fixed cost of several seconds, which is a bad trade on a calculation you could have done in three.

The rule that follows is simple: calculate mentally by default and reach for the calculator only for genuinely multi-step work. To make that viable you need about six techniques.

The six that pay for themselves

Build percentages from ten per cent
Ten per cent is a decimal shift, and everything else assembles from it. 15 per cent of 840: ten per cent is 84, half of that is 42, total 126. 35 per cent of 620: 62 times three is 186, plus half of 62 which is 31, total 217. This single habit removes most percentage arithmetic from your calculator.

Percentage change is difference over original, and the original matters
Revenue goes from 250 to 310. The change is 60, over the original 250, which is 60 divided by 250. Multiply both by four to get 240 over 1000, so 24 per cent. Choosing the wrong denominator is the single most common error on these items, and it is always the earlier value.

Reverse percentages: divide, do not subtract
A price after a 20 per cent discount is £96. What was it before? Not £96 plus 20 per cent. £96 is 80 per cent of the original, so divide by 0.8, giving £120. Test writers include the subtract-instead answer as a distractor on almost every reverse-percentage item, so getting this right is worth a mark you would otherwise have handed over.

Turn ratios into a single unit
Profit is split 3:5:8 and the total is £96,000. There are 16 parts, so one part is £6,000, and the shares are £18,000, £30,000 and £48,000. Finding the unit first is faster and far less error-prone than working each share as a fraction of the total.

Estimate before you calculate, and use the options
Multiple-choice numerical items usually have widely spread options. Round aggressively: 4,860 divided by 51 is roughly 5,000 over 50, which is about 100. If only one option is near 100 you are done, and you have spent five seconds. Reserve the exact calculation for items where two options are close.

Know the fraction and percentage equivalents cold
A half is 50 per cent, a third is 33.3, a quarter is 25, a fifth is 20, an eighth is 12.5, a twelfth is 8.3, a sixteenth is 6.25. Recognising that a chart segment is about an eighth converts a division into a recall, and recall is roughly free.
Two seconds of question-reading saves twenty
Before touching a number, answer two questions: what unit is the answer in, and which time period or category is being asked about? Test writers reliably include distractors built from the right calculation on the wrong row, and from the right number in thousands when the question wanted millions. Both are avoided by reading the question stem twice and the axis label once.

Finding the figures faster

This is the bigger half of the time budget and it gets almost no attention in preparation material.

Read the question before the table
Candidates instinctively study the exhibit first. That is backwards. Read the question, then go into the table looking for two specific things. Studying a table you have no question about is pure cost.
Habit two
Track with something physical
A finger or a pen tip on the row you are reading. It sounds trivial. It eliminates the single largest source of lost time on data-heavy items, which is losing your place and re-scanning the column.
Habit three
Check the units line once, deliberately
Figures in thousands, in millions, in local currency, indexed to a base year. Every one of these has a matching distractor in the options. Ten seconds spent on the header note is the cheapest insurance on the paper.

Count the tabs before you start
Aon cut-e and several other vendors hide data behind tabs you have to switch between. Knowing how many there are tells you the navigation cost of an item, which is what should drive your decision about whether to attempt it.

The skip decision, which depends on the vendor

There is no universal rule here and getting it wrong is expensive.

  • No penalty for wrong answers: SHL, Criteria, Wonderlic and most conventional batteries. A blank and a wrong answer score identically, so guess on anything you cannot solve and never leave an item empty. With four options, a guess has a positive expected value; a blank has none.
  • Marks deducted for wrong answers: the Aon cut-e scales family and the Thomas Aptitude battery. Here a guess has a negative expected value unless you can eliminate options. If you cannot rule out at least two, skip it.
  • Response time recorded without a visible clock: Sova, and to a degree Korn Ferry Talent Q. Nothing tells you to hurry and your pace is scored anyway, so the discipline is to commit rather than to circle back.

Establishing which of those three you are in, before you start, is worth more than any arithmetic shortcut on this page. If you do not know, work out which provider sent your test first.

A twenty-minute drill that actually works

Reading shortcuts does nothing. They have to become automatic, and automatic means retrieved without deliberation. A drill that gets there faster than generic practice:

  1. Five minutes of percentage building. Random three-digit numbers, find 15, 35 and 60 per cent of each, out loud, no writing. Stop when it feels boring; boring is the target state.
  2. Five minutes of percentage change. Pairs of numbers, compute the change both ways. Deliberately notice that going from 80 to 100 is a 25 per cent rise while going from 100 to 80 is a 20 per cent fall. That asymmetry is a distractor on real papers.
  3. Five minutes of reverse percentages. The one everybody gets wrong under pressure, and the one with the most reliable distractor.
  4. Five minutes of estimation against options. Take real practice items and answer them by estimation alone, then check. You will be right more often than feels responsible, and that is the point.

What to do the week before

Drill for four or five short sessions rather than one long one, then do a full-length timed run of the actual format two days before. Doing the timed run last matters: the shortcuts need to be automatic before you test them under pressure, or the run just teaches you that you are slow.

These techniques only help once they are automatic, and automatic comes from timed repetition rather than from reading.
